Absolutly terrible experience. Total disregard for public safety. Had a meal in restaurant advised of food intolerance  meal came out clearly with offending ingredients. This was sent back we adked if it could be remade without and we were assured it could be. A new one appeared with an assurance it was freshly made without  the problem ingredients. 3 bites in my wife was violently ill which lasted all night. Upon investigation the ingredients were still present just buried in the rice. The same waitress come manager then stated it was impossible to remake it without because the ingredients come ready prepared. Really disappointed, and no one had the curtesy to check the next day if my wife was ok.

Hotel very tired and needs updating, booked in fine bar person he was a bit strange no atmosphere at all. Had food was ok not good few drinks. Went up to bed turned radiator up was still freezing kept walking up through the night cold. Bed very clean but over all bathroom mirror was dirty and holes in the walls in the bedroom. Lots of damp patches all over needs lots of money spending on it bring it to its former glory.

Night away

A lovely stay but the room was a little tired but for the price you can't really complain. However the great staff, fab beer, lovely fire and an absolutely brilliant breakfast made up for the room.
Will definitely stay here again as that breakfast was unbeatable.

Amazing gorgeous breakfast.

This hotel is probably not for those looking for the bland sterility of a chain and the attendant predictability that generally entails. This hotel is quirky, with an interesting history and some of the best staff I've ever encountered, anywhere. 

We arrived on a cold autumnal evening  after spending the day exploring the surrounding countryside and visitor attractions, of which there are many,  to find that the gas supply had run out - entirely the supplier's fault, not the hotel's I might add! The staff were eager to assure us that it wouldn't be allowed to detract for our stay and were very much right about that ! A roaring log fire soon had the bar area  - which opened early - very cosy and a good range of local beers kept us occupied until dinner was ready.  

Despite having limited cooking facilities available, the range of food still on offer for dinner was excellent, clearly lovingly cooked with excellent ingredients, a theme to be repeated the following morning at breakfast. Definitely two of the best hotel meals I've encountered for quite a long while, and extremely reasonably priced too. 

The room was very nicely furnished with an assortment of period chairs, sofas and cabinets, a walk in wardrobe, a separate bathroom, and a warm and comfortable lounge,  not to mention an elegant free standing bath - for which there was no shortage of hot water !

The icing on an excellent cake was the price: very similar indeed to a nearby chain hotel that had none of its charm, friendly staff or wonderful food.


Above and beyond: a delightful country house hotel with a few quirks and awesome staff!, great cuisine and amazing rooms

I stayed here on my own but had a twin room as my husband was supposed to have joined me but was ill and couldn't make it.  I arrived to what I thought was the hotel just as it started to get darker and parked my car, thinking I was either extremely early and an unwanted guest as there were no lights or other cars and the "cottage" was very unwelcoming, only to find that the hotel I was supposed to have parked was in fact over the road.  Ooops!  I left my car there and sauntered over to the hotel where I was told the car was safe exactly where I had left it.  I believe that cottage also belongs to the hotel and is available for bookings.  Personally, I would go at a time of year when it's more hospitable weather wise since the dark and dank conditions did nothing for the ambience of that little cottage.  The Hotel on the other hand, I walked in and there were no reception staff immediately at hand.  They share their role as working behind the bar or other such matters and you have to ring a bell for attention.  A lady arrived with an usual welcoming manner, dry humour, but nonetheless she was quite pleasant and remembered my communications with them regarding my husband (tick).  They also gladly changed my booking with booking.com which was less accommodating (tick).  They showed me where breakfast would be that I had access to the guest lounge and then showed me to my room.  The room was warm.  I have read other reviews that the room was cold but that these guests hadn't prebooked but I had and so my heater had been turned on prior to my arrival and I felt quite comfortable in the room even though the wallpaper was peeling off the walls.  I noted that the wallpaper is the same in every room I visited.  Exactly the same!!  So a job lot of wallpapering had been done but it seems the place is looking a bit sad and in need of some additional care and maintenance.  I wanted to go around my room with some superglue and stick down those corners for them.  It's not a huge job and it wouldn't take that much time to do and so worth the effort.  The shower is in a large bath.  It reminded me of one of those asylum bathrooms a bit, the really high ceilings and that hospital quality flooring with a curtain around the shower (not quite like Psycho :-)).  Anyway, it was comfortable.  However, I decided to go for a drink downstairs in their public bar and didn't see the last two steps on the turn and fell down and twisted my ankle.  Blimey it hurt!  Perhaps they might want to consider some yellow stripey tape on those two stairs.  After a little cry on my own, nobody came to see how I was :-( (they didn't hear me) I hopped to the bar, asked for some ice in a bag, and told them why I needed it and apart from sorry to hear that, no offer of an accident book to sign and complete.  I was quite surprised by this lack of judgement because I might have wanted to complain to health and safety about it.  As it happens it is feeling much better as I write this review but I can see that even after 4 days my ankle is still swollen and I may need an MRI scan if the swelling doesn't subside.  I can walk on it.  Anyway, I slept well except for need to keep adjusting the pillow my leg had to rest on due to the pain in my ankle and next morning I woke up at a decent hour (their breakfast time is 8 to 10) and had a small english breakfast (one of everything) - service was slow but I was in no rush.  Whilst I sat in this dining room I noticed more of that wallpaper and some really bad issues with damp behind wallpaper that was almost falling off the walls.  There were no fires lit which was a bit disappointing as the weather was sad looking, skies were grey, was raining and of course they had damp issues and the fire may have been a good remedy.  Cost of running this place is an obvious concern it seems unlikely that this place will be around in a couple of years at the current rate of interest being given to it currently.  I don't think I would return as I like to stay in places that remind me of home or at least an improvement on that.  Here I felt like I was staying somewhere that was unloved.  I don't know how true that really is but it was a shame.

Lovely idyllic surroundings. The hotel lovely and peaceful and relaxing. 

My husband and I will never forget the 2 nights we stayed there. I believe we stayed in the Master bedroom.  Had steps going up to it and the doorway to the room was moved, and the old staircase to the dining room blocked off. The first night I heard something in the mid night ie 3am approximately go down the steps to the landing. No breathing, no doors opening or shutting. 

The second night again around a similar time. I heard someone at the side of the bed striking a match for a candle. I believe it was a maid. I never said anything to my husband but the next morning my husband spoke about a smell of a match. 

We went into Penrith and in a shop saw a match saying match made in heaven. 

I wish I knew who she was and when she was there and I always wanted to help her. She must have been there a very long time continuing her loyal service. 


Maid in Nenthead

This hotel was probably very good in its day but sadly the day is not now. We stayed with our dog at the end of January. The welcome from the staff was very warm and friendly and the hotel was very warm throughout.
Both inside and out the hotel needed some TLC . Outside the woodwork was rotten ,windows had flaking paint, the garden was very overgrown. The inside of the hotel wasn’t much better, the dining room had wallpaper coming off the wall in places. Our room was so small but had everything we needed. Because we had a dog we couldn’t sit in the hotel lounge so we had to sit in the bar which wasn’t very comfortable just Formica tables and chairs .
The restaurant was only open on our first night but the menu was the same in both the restaurant and bar and very uninspiring, pie and chips.scampi and chips fish and chips etc 
The hotel had the feeling of an old people’s home rather than a country hotel.

Nent hall hotel needs TLC

This hotel was great for the price & we would definitely return & stay a couple of nights next time possibly without our dog so we can experience the none dog rooms ! However it was perfect for us in our dog friendly room, which was located on the far side of the hotel.  There were some lovely lounge areas around the hotel, one looked very cozy as had an open fire. We ate in the evening in the hotel bar where  we could take our well behaved dog, for breakfast dog stayed in the car as not allowed in the breakfast room. Talking of breakfast this was amazing & was not expecting this due to the low price of the room which included breakfast in the price ! The surroundings were lovely & we went for a nice stroll along the river accessed across the road where we saw tawny owls. 
I also left my phone charger in my room, rang the hotel once we got home & they returned it in the pre paid envelope I sent them so thank you very much.

Great hotel at a reasonable price

Spent two delightful days in the Nenthall country house. We have been visiting for 6 years and have always been impressed with the ambience and comfort. The staff were very welcoming and efficient nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner both nights which was very enjoyable in the bar area with our dog Doris looking on with envy. 
Thank you once again for a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Would recommend.

Lovely stay as usual

We booked this hotel on a 2 night special offer. Its close to Alstonwith lots of walks nearby. The hotel can print off these for you.
We received a friendly welcome on arrival and was taken up to our 4 poster room.
There was an issue with the heating system while we were there but didnt spoil our stay.
The staff were super friendly and there was a log fire in the bar & restaurant.
We could choose either to dine in as it was the same menu.
The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. As was the wine selection.
Breakfast was part buffet style with cooked breakfast done to order.
The hotel could do with a bit of TLC looking tatty on the exterior and some interior areas.
This didnt affect our stay though.
