Spotlessly clean, very welcoming and friendly place.  Brilliant location in the heart of Mahdia's medina - a surprisingly peaceful and untouristy place to hang out for a few days.  Very good value for money as well.

I stayed in late December, and it was cold. The room I had with an outside door on the top floor could have benefitted from some sort of heating, though with a couple thick blankets over me I slept fairly well (only disturbed by the howling wind -- nothing they could do about that!). The shared bathroom facilities were basic but fine, and clean.
The location is excellent, and the hotel has charm -- overall, definitely recommended. I had a nice long chat with the manager and one of the staff, who gave me useful advice for the rest of my journey.

So laidback and friendly. There's no thick of things. Mahdia's one of those historic peninsulas that is semi-broken off like a tooth, when all you need's a cap. 

To get a beer in the lovely Med/Greek/Turkish square would've been lovely underwith the hanging branches. But alcohol is frowned as smoke is blown. Oh it's somewhat frustrating not just in Tunisia when smoke gets in yer eyes and a fly slurp is demeaned. There is a Monoprix with a large dose of gaspers for legit drink through the other flap. However, the Neptune, round the other arm of the penin, has charisma as a disadjunct pub. Near the lovely light railway station (elaboration in a minute) are two very pleasant bar/restaurants (allowed to sit outside with a beer for the only time in the country - I wish more were poss)

To trains: 

Sousse-Monastir-Mahdia is bliss. Use it easy-peasy regular as you can. Called the metro.  

Tunis - Sousse. Takes at least 3 hours longer than expected, late on wrong platform. Actually not as bad as Kigoma - Dodoma in Tanzania which was only 5 & a half days late as far as Tabora.

Jem - Sfax. 55 mins late. Arrived about an hour and whenever after expected. Very acceptable.

Hold on: Tunis Marine - Marsa Plage (Carthage & Sidi Bou Said)

Also: Tunis Metro is also very much better than much in Glasgow

This is a celebration of when you can travel by prescribed rail, the method & the chuggitty-chug is there, albeit somewhat scrushed in unseated. Marrakesh to Ouarzazate, slumbering through gravel desert: is relaxing.

To get back to Inn El Medina, Mahdia, Nice wee nook hotel, Nice wee courtyard table in the patio. Friendly people. Thank you.

To get to el-Jem (Definite Recommendation) don't do what I did & hike 3 km to louage station. A taxi in Tunisia is almost always honest. (I compare with Marrakechy parts of el-Maghreb, not here.)

Great location in the old city, near the Skifa gate. Warm and friendly host. Unexpensive. Shared bathroom & toilet, but well kept. The manager is happy to help with any queries. Wifi available (worked well in the lobby, less so in our room)

Heart of Mahdia

Great location, marm and low cost

The staff were friendly and helpful. We were a group of 6, who chose this inn because we wanted to stay in the medina. We were given rooms on the 2nd floor, and shared one basic, adequately clean, in need of renovation bathroom and toilet, with 2 other couples (ten people) on the same floor. You could hear the toilet running most of the night and with all that use it wasn't very clean in the morning. The rooms were quite large and very clean, and had a fan on a timer. We don't know the cost of the rooms as it was included in a tour with "Visit Tunisia DMC" tours, but they hadn't used this inn before, they usually use hotels in the tourist zones.  The breakfast was basic but typical of those we had during our tour of Tunisia. Overall ok for a night, but really backpackers accommodation which is a pity because the medina and port are charming, and there aren't many other accommodation alternatives in Mahdia.
