Because this trip is not a self driving holiday, no matter where I stay, I would be taking a taxi. Therefore, I chose a hostel that will be closest to where most of the planned night activities are. 

The hosts were very friendly, I was lucky enough to speak Mandarin, and therefore no communication problem. Although I initially booked on Agoda, and later found out via on their own official website that a special discount will be applied if there is only one person staying . The hosts were very apologetic about this, but it is only a small amount, it still shows that Hualien people are very honest!

The room is clean and spacious, sufficient for 2 to 3 people almost! The design is modern and minimalistic, and love the bathtub and large bathroom space. Would recommend!

A wonderful hidden away gem!

We were made so welcome by Mr. Zhu - although he speaks only a little English. He gave lots of great recommendations for food, entertainment and trips. 

 The room was clean, very comfortable bed, amenities. It had a quirky design where the bathroom was an open box (our only complaint - not much privacy). 

Very central in Hualien town, surrounded by great places to eat and a 15 stroll to the night market.

Quirky welcoming B&B

Came across Longantree on Agoda and it’s a GEM! This Monocle worthy but unassuming B&B is located close to the “golden triangle” with lots of food choices around. 

First thing you’ll notice about this place is how beautiful and clean it is. In fact, this place is so clean that it’s a shoes-off premise (they will provide fluffy slippers) and they even clean your luggage when you arrive. Personally, I love it (who knows what germs and dirt other guests may have brought with them? 😂), but I can imagine some guests may be slightly put off by this level of OCD. This is the only hotel in the world where I feel OK to sit on the carpet because it’s so clean. 

Do bear in mind that this is a B&B and the owner don’t stay overnight in the premise. They do require you to check in by 7pm, and if you are arriving in Hualien after 7pm, do let them know in advance. 

The owner, his partner and the main housekeeper are a semi-permanent fixture in the premise (starting from around 9am to 7pm at night). This makes it a true B&B as opposed to AirBnB operators who operate 20 apartments around town. I ended up having a long discussion about Taiwanese economy and people with them one evening. Their English isn’t great, so the conversation was in Chinese. It was inspiring to hear the level of dedication they put into this B&B. The owner said he’s the type who likes to visit a place and just laze around in the hotel.  And that’s exactly how this place turns out. 

If you want a place to relax and read a book  (or meditate, or sleep, or day dreaming) after checking out Taroko Gorge, Chihshingtan beach and the local food, this is the place for you. I would even go so far to say stay for another day in Hualien and give yourself the time to relax in this hotel. Check out the photos I’ve posted. 

Home away from home 

Excellent location-- can walk around the whole town, amazing dining options nearby and Taroko gorge is just half hour drive. Wonderful, smiling and helpful staff; very clean and hygienic!  The rooms are comfortably big, with TV, hot water kettle and fridge.
Would definitely go back and stay there.

Very comfortable and pleasant stay!

Stayed at the Longantree over the long weekend with friends. Although this B&B didn't offer breakfast we didn't miss it as it's centrally located and there are a plethora of options in the neighbourhood. 
The rooms are spacious and well appointed, and the attentive staff ensure that they're kept spotlessly clean and fresh. Guests are expected to store their shoes in lockers in the entrance foyer and are handed flip flops to use in the rooms. 
I'd recommend the rooms on the lower floors as there is no lift. The staff arrive mid morning and leave late evening (there's no staff on the premises overnight) but this is no issue at all as they're always available on call. 
My friends and I were incredibly impressed by the service we received from John and his staff. I mentioned in passing that I had a bad back and John immediately showed up with a complimentary box of pain relief strips from the pharmacy. The next day my friend needed to visit the hospital for a prescription jab and John drove us there himself. They advised us on local dining, things to do, and organised our transport as well. 
Can't recommend the Longantree highly enough. Fell in love with Hualien and will definitely stay at the Longantree the next time I visit!
