Halgolla Plantation Home was the last stop on our two week visit to Sri Lanka and what a great wrap up. Emil and Arlene are warm and amazing hosts and made us feel right at home. From the minute we landed in Sri Lanka they checked in on us and made sure we were doing okay. Our breakfasts and dinners were delicious and the room we had - Nellie’s suite, was spacious. We also got a tour of the beautiful property plus home and were able to see what a working vanilla bean and spice plantation looks like. Emil was also kind and patient to answer my many questions about Sri Lanka in general before we arrived - this helped me organize my trip. The driver he recommended to us was great and ended up being with us for our entire trip. The property is 30 minutes outside of Kandy and basically up on the mountain. This worked for us in terms of having much needed peace and quiet. 

Lovely stay with warm hosts

If you are visiting kandy and Gallagedara area  in Sri Lanka..Halgolla is a must.. a historic plantation and exquisite  home.. Emil and Arlene are  perfect  hosts and surely will be friends by the time you leave.They will entertain you and take you on a journey of days gone by in their historic home. Emils knowledge of the local area, its vegetation,its history and the many personalities  who have spent time in this home will keep you entertained for days.Sit on the verandah and look over the amazing lush landscapes and watch the magnificent sunsets. Arlene  and their staff will tempt your tastebuds with cuisine using local fruits ..spices, herbs fish and meats. Breakfast and dinner consisted of the very best of  authentic Sri Lankan cuisine..can still taste the kiribath (rice dish) served for breakfast and the fresh mangos from the estate.
The bedrooms were like going back in time ..the beds ..the mosquito nets and when the lights went out ...the fireflys provided an amazing night show!!
The journey out of kandy was well worth this once in a lifetime experience...we will certianly return as there is  so much more to see at Holgolla.. and of course we feel we have made friends with our gracious hosts Arlene and Emil.

Sri Lankas Hidden Paradise

We spent the day at "HPH", walking with Emil in the morning and then having a Sri Lankan feast with the whole family in the afternoon.  We were only there for lunch so didn't see the rooms available, but can report that the hosts are charming, excellent raconteurs and a fascinating immersion into the real, beyond the tourist brochures Sri Lanka.  And the food is some of the best you'll eat anywhere on the island.  I would definitely stay here if I were in Sri Lanka again. 

Not to be missed home-cooked lunch and even better conversation

I spent two nights over the new year with Arlene and Emil, and only wish I had more time. They are warm and loving, and made me feel right at home. I checked in here hoping to catch up on some reading and writing, but found myself spending hours listening to Emil's wonderful life stories, eating way too much amazing Sri Lankan food and going for peaceful walks around the 50-acre estate. I left with a heavy heart and hope to be back again. 

I could not recommend a stay here enough!

Beautiful home, amazing hosts!

We stayed for one night and all the meals were authentically Sri Lankan with beautifully made string hoppers, dahls, sambals, boiled egg, fish and chicken curries. Aunty and Uncle were so welcoming it felt as if I was visiting some of my own relatives but also a family history museum. Throughout the hallways and dining room there were lots of sepia, black and white and more recent colour photographs of the two hosts family trees. I was in awe of how far back in time some of them went.
My friend and I had a little wander around the plantation after dinner complete with our plastic leech proof socks and found Nutmeg and Cinnamon aplenty but thankfully no leeches. Our visit co-incided with a one-day friendly international cricket match between Sri-Lanka Vs Australia so obviously we were glued to the TV in the lounge for most of the evening whilst drinking some of the best tea on planet earth in my view.
Before I travelled to Sri Lanka my friend told me that we would be staying here and showed me previous newsletters and pictures. My response was that it looked like a small patch of heaven on earth and after staying there I can honestly say that I was right! You need to go and experience it for yourself in order to believe me.

A small patch of heaven in Sri Lanka!

Probably my favourite place (of our 5 week tour). Arlene was a great host, kind, open, willing to share her life and beautiful home with us.
Excellent food.
Direct encounter with history of Sri Lanka.
I also found the hosts very inspiring.
