My husband and my sister-in-law went to this beautiful little castle and spent two nights there in January. I must say that its a place like no other. If you like to explore different places rather than ordinary places this is one place that you should go. The location (close to liptons seat, idalgashinna, nine arches bridge and many other attractions), interior, hospitality, food... everything is just amazing. The owners Mr. and Mrs Wilfried were very nice and always talked to us with a smile. Collecting antiques has been a hobby of Mr Wilfried and he has built this little castle filled with lot of antiques and he’ll be very pleased to explain you the details of those antiques if you are interested. I would recommend this place to anyone.

A place to go if you like being in unique places!!

My friend and I caught the train from Peradeniya to Badulla which was a great experience. The scenery along the way is breathtaking in parts. We got to the hotel and was met by Wilfried and had some welcome drinks and chatted about his home. He is an avid antique collector and it’s all on display. One of the things he collects is these amazing doors which are centuries old. The accommodation was comfortable, the food at dinner and breakfast was plentiful, the hospitality was generous and friendly. His wife, Princy is the manager and her attention to detail showed also. I would certainly recommend to stay there.

Unique place to stay

This majestic home full of antiquities and treasures is an absolute joy to stay in! It is luxurious, unique and quite unforgettable. Your hosts, Wilfried and Princy, as well as their attentive staff, pamper you and treat you like royalty. They are simply the kindest, most whole hearted hosts you will ever meet. The views are breathtaking! The food is first rate and you will sleep so soundly here on a very comfortable bed. ‘T En Zal is a special experience and we loved it!

Simply sublime!

A warm welcome, captivating host, remarkable architecture, sublime food , oh and the view , plus the location, it is the best place we have stayed in Sri Lanka.  It doesn’t get better than this. We have no idea why it received a poor review totally unjust. Can’t wait to come back for more and to stay longer Amazing 😉 huge thank you to Wilfred and the team sorry we had to leave 😢

Wow nothing beats this, it was enchanting.

Wilfred has built a fantastic house which we had the privilege to stay in. The art and woodwork is simply astounding. We stayed for three nights and were treated like royalty. This is not a budget stay but what you get is the full boutique B&B experience with the biggest and best breakfast we came across in Sri Lanka.

It is worth noting that it can get cold in Haputale which came as a bit of a shock after the heat of Kandy. Fortunately we were given hot water bottles and a warm welcome.

Simply the Best

Having read such great reviews about this place, it made our disappointment around our stay even greater.  One of the reasons we’ve picked it was due to the reviews of the great home cooked food but we were told on arrival that the wife of the couple who run the property was away in hospital and so this was not an option and we had to go to the neighbouring café to get a meal.  The room was clean, but very cold and they offered us a hot water bottle, which was nice touch but no way sufficient to keep us warm or dry our towels.  We were also told we needed to give them an hour’s notice if we wanted to have a shower in order to have sufficient hot water – not ideal when we were both in need of warming up!  The whole property felt very dark and not the environment you would expect to enjoy the views.  It was also very windy on this part of the ridge, whereas just the other side of the ridge was much more sheltered. The gentleman owner was hospitable in his unique style, but we found it a little overbearing, especially at breakfast when he sat in a chair opposite our breakfast table and watched us eat and engaged us in conversation, instead of giving us the privacy to enjoy breakfast ourselves.  The property had advised that there was accommodation for our guide, but he was told on arrival that it was not possible.  We decided that we didn’t want to stay for a second night as there were too many things that were not right for us and not what the website/reviews had promised but the owner became very agitated by this and insisted on charging us as these were “the rules”.  He did not have the ability to read a situation and find a compromise to allow everyone to feel happy with the outcome – his way or the highway.  Booking.com were excellent at trying to assist us, but they were unable to get the owner to budge.  I travel a lot and work in the travel industry and I have not complained about a property before in this environment but felt it important to share our experience and would welcome a reply from the owner.

A disappointing stay

A wonderful place full of art, stories, magic, views, intimacy, peace...and delicius food. It is worth spending some time here and surrender to wonder. Intriguing rooms, kindest hosts. A real hidden jewel               

Magic

Wilfred and Princey made us feel special. We were only looking for a stop over but wish now we had stayed a while. Their attention to detail, devotion to our comfort and excellent food makes a potent combination.
