I was planning on staying in Potes, which a guidebook had described as a lovely village. Its really more of a town and had way too much traffic and crowds for my taste. So i continued on the road to Fuente De. I'm glad I did because I stumbled upon El Caserio. It's in a tiny rural hamlet by a rushing stream. My room was cosy and spotless, and super quiet. The restaurant/bar is friendly and serves honest local food. It was super base for a few days of hiking around the valley. Two caveats: don't expect much for breakfast. It's just the bar and you order coffee and rolls. And the wifi didn't work well for me. Others didn't seem to have any problem, so maybe it's that my devices are too old.

cosy, good value, friendly restaurant

This small hotel was located right on the main road in Cantabria. My room was small and a bit spare with a small window. Though stuffy at first, at night when it mattered most, the room cooled off nicely. In case it matters, I did not find staff that spoke English. In back of the hotel there is a nice backyard and garden area where you can sit and read or take a coffee. In the same building, there is a restaurant, where I had a very good breakfast and dinner (not included in my booking fee). There are plenty of hikes and walks nearby, and it's nice to be outside of the hectic bustle that is Potes. At all times, the place was quiet. The price makes it a great value.

Simple and pleasant stay

An adorable hotel nestled just outside the Picos de Europa national park and 6.5km from Potes.  The room had beautiful wooden floors, large and comfortable beds and en suite bathroom and balcony.  Bathroom was small, but not crowded and balcony was lovely with chairs and a table.  Value for money is excellent.

Be warned, however, that there is not a bus from Potes (except the odd bus that runs from from Santander to Fuente dé) and the 6.5km is pleasant enough, and has a footpath for approximately half of it, but takes over an hour.  There is a campsite just down the road which does basics such as bread and cheese (the restaurant there is cheap, but there's a very good reason for this).  

The hotel sadly doesn't have a restaurant any more.  The very pleasant owner did however run us 2km up the road to the next village which does have a very nice, but not especially cheap, restaurant.  

There are a few walks that start from the hotel itself, for which the owner has basic maps, but be warned that the maps are not really enough and it's very easy to get lost so a proper OS map is highly recommended.

All in all a great place to stay as long as you don't mind having a bit of walking time.

Beautiful, clean and great value

We stayed 3 nights in this simple inn. It is on the road to Fuente De and has spotless rooms with good ensuite facilities. There are two porch areas to sit out at the back of the hotel and a simple enclosed lawn with a couple of chairs.
Breakfast was simple with coffee and rolls (3.50 euro each)and the 3 course evening meal was basic wholesome food with about 3 choices like trout (excellent), pork loin, or ommelette. This cost 12 euroeach with water and wine included. This is excellent value. There is a tourist office and doctor/chemist 200 metres up the road.
