After visiting the Volcano and hot springs, we popped in for lunch.
One of the few buildings to survive the 1994 eruption, it is surrounded by reminders of that day along with the strong Japanese history from WWii.
After Suzie and her crew put on a most wonderful Chinese spread, we were guided through General Yamamto's bunker (he was the head of the South Pacific forces)

I very much appreciated the very spacious homey rustic feeling. As a PNG local, I loved that there were two fans in the room to circulate the air especially at night. The location of the hotel is within walking distance of the township were my place of work is located for the adventurer. The hotel is also a five minute car ride away from Mt Tavurvur for those wanting to see an active volcano up-close.

A easy 20 minute walk from the port along Malaguna Rd (main St).
We stopped in on the way to Yamamoto’s bunker.
The drinks were cold and the Phoenix Restaurant menu is comprehensive. Asian styles, seafood and burgers. The staff are friendly, accomodating and the food is very high standard.
Burger was great and the prawns amazing. Do yourself a favour and drop in and say hello to Susie and enjoy the ambience and the food.

A sanctuary from the tropical sun

This hotel has very big rooms. The hotel and bathrooms are old. I am ok with that in a place like PNG. I found this hotel not about a 2 star. The restaurant and service were not great. The wifi didn't work. I truly wanted this to be a great little locally owned gem but it was not. It has potential but I wouldn't choose to stay there again.

we brought our group here for a few days and the hotel was very comfortable and the chinese food in the restaurant was excellent.  we will be coming back.  You can walk from the hotel to some war remains and even the volcano

We didn't actually stay at this hotel as we were on a cruise ship. We walked from the port to the hotel which took us about an hour in the heat! When we arrived we were greeted with open arms. We decided to buy an internet package but unfortunately the internet wasn't working well so they refunded our money without question. They allowed my husband to charge his buggy and called us a 'taxi' to get back to  the port as their shuttle bus had gone to the airport.
The dining room/restaurant is absolutely divine. The chef is Filipino and the food was reasonable priced.
If I ever had the occasion to revisit by plane I would definitely stay there. 

Fantastic staff 5 stars for their warm welcome!

We stayed here for 5 nights. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Lovely garden setting. Great to sit by the pool and have drinks or coffee of an afternoon.  A lot of history tied to the area which makes it an interesting place to stay.  Local buses stop regularly near by and within walking distance to some attractions.

The Rabaul Hotel is a true survivor as is its amazing owner Susie - I love this hotel!

It provides a solid and reliable professional service, with deeply friendly staff and exceptional food by most likely the best chef in Rabaul - it may not be grand but it is for me home away from home with clean, comfortable rooms to meet all pockets - no visit to Rabaul is complete without staying at the Rabaul Hotel.

Rabaul Hotel - Highly Recommended

The Rabaul Hotel is basically the only place to stay in Rabaul, since many others were not repaired from the 1994 volcano eruption. The hotel has very efficient, friendly and helpful staff, and are able to arrange any trips or tours you may require, with no added costs. 
The rooms are large, comfortable, and each has a fridge and air-con. They are cleaned every single day, even if not needed. 
We were able to eat and drink outside by the pool which enabled us to meet other guests, and that became one of our trips highlight. The whole story of the hotel is quite fascinating, that they have managed to keep it going among the ashes is quite remarkable.
