This is our fifth stay at Tjallewal. We had another very comfortable week with very hospitable and friendly hosts. The room was nicely decorated and everything was clean and fresh.

The breakfast was typically Dutch and there was plenty of it!

This is an excellent location for visiting Schagen and surrounding area.

Yet another lovely stay

We are just back from the trip. Had great fun, meeting great and kind people. All is well except for the stay in this B&B that dampens our holiday mood. 

We spent 4 nights in this B&B since it is close to Bloeiend Zijpe to see tulip blossom. Everything seems good when we emailed the host to arrange for the accommodation. However, we found the host was unfriendly, suspicious and sensitive.

The environment of the house is good, and we are able to see sunrise in the room. To these, we give one mark!

1) Payment first!
When we just arrived, we haven't totally settled down and she immediately asked for full payment. When we asked for map (usually there is free city map given in hostels or hotels). The host didn't offer or borrow us any simple map and simply charge me Euro 3 for big and detailed map. Fair enough. And she explained “this is little money, you should not care”. To us, it is not about how much, it is about attitude.

2) Room inspection
We did wash few of our clothes in the room since we have stayed for 4-night. After the host cleaned the room, she came to me and asked if I did laundry. As she claimed that the cost is expensive, we shouldn’t do it. Fair enough, we obliged and didn’t do it as per her request. 

On the same day, we borrowed hair dryer and asked if we could loan it for few days, she said ok. After she cleaned the room the next day, the hair dryer was taken away and we have to ask again. She did lend it to us and said it is for hair not for drying clothes. I was so shocked with such claim! 

3) Bike rental
We did not have driving license and worried that it was difficult to reach other destination since this place is at countryside and not convenient to take public transport. The owner emailed that bike rental company will send bikes to their home, so I am ok to stay at their B&B (it is too far and time consuming to walk to other destination). When we were at her home and asked her to call the bike company, she said she was not sure if they would send or not. If not, she said we have to walk for 30 mins to the bike shop. (she had no intention to drive us there)

If it is the case, why she has not mentioned this issue in email when we booked the B&B?! We may consider other solutions or hotels. Luckily, the owner of  bike rental company is very helpful and send bikes to us. Also, he shown us the direction.

4) Heater is not always on unless being requested
It was below 10 degree Celsius during night time. We were not able to switch on and have to ask for it. 

5) Old facilities
The mattress was too soft. 
The mirror at bathroom suddenly fell off and broke. It was so scary and it was only fixed by some thick tape. Luckily, we were not at bathroom during that moment.

I would not recommend this B&B.

Uncomfortable stay with unfriendly host

We spent 2 nights in this charming B&B in the rural north of Holland. The B&B is in a very quiet location, but only 2 kms outside of the lovely market town of Schagen. Very friendly hosts, nice rooms, spotlessly clean and good breakfasts. Recommended

Super!

The serendipetous discovery of this B&B followed a mistaken turn in the road.  All the guest rooms have private bath facilities in this thatch roofed, pole structure, restored cottage and all have a view of the surrounding tulip fields and farm land.  The narrow road leading to the B&B, with drainage canals on either side, is part of the charm and leads back 2 km to Schagen where numerous restaurants can provide meals other than the very generous continental breakfast provided by the friendly host.  A great find if looking for an out of the way location where the charm of the old world is still visible but still close enough to a major expressway to be readily accessible.
