Very Clean, Quiet (my  Room 214  was super quiet, as it was away from the street) AC works Well, Staff excellent, bet price among hotels near the Cathedral and 2/5 mile from the Zocolo.  What more do you need?

I would go again!

I stayed two weeks at the Hotel Maela a little over a month ago and I am late writing this review. But write, I must!
I totally enjoyed a solid two weeks at this hotel. From the moment I checked in, I knew this would be a pleasant stay.  The friendly night desk fellow even carried my suitcase up the stairs to my room. (Do I look that old?") And he also explained how the TV remotes work. Very helpful. Be aware, credit cards are not accepted here so be sure to have cash. 
Miriam is the daytime front counter /manager lady who helped answer all of my "little" questions about the hotel and Oaxaca City and things to do and places to eat. She is the perfect face for representing the hotel and working with the public. 
Lulaah Restaurant is a great little economical eating spot just inside the main gate of the hotel. Good prices and great basic local dishes. Fresh squeezed papaya and orange juice combo! Get a large. Might even get a table next to a wall outlet to charge your phone. 
Location? Can't beat it. Literally one or two blocks from much of everything. Many restaurants very close. And Santo Domingo, the Botanical Garden, the pedestrian walking street,  and Llano Park. All very nearby. 
Transportation from and back to the airport was simple. Get an inexpensive "collectivo" from the airport to the hotel. And the hotel will schedule a taxi back to the airport for you any time of day or night. Typical fare for that ride is 250 pesos if the hotel arranges for you.
Security is assured. The front desk is manned at all hours. (So late arrivals / very early departures) are easy. And nobody who doesn't belong there can enter. 
The cleaning staff ladies were always very thorough and careful around my things. Every day, my room was resupplied with 2 water bottles, bathroom essentials, fresh towels and even a daily change of bed linens and light blanket bed spread. Next time I will have to tell them a bedding change just every 3 days is fine. And although the hotel does not offer those little safes in the individual rooms, I always felt very secure that my possessions would not be touched. All of this courtesy and consideration for me as a guest was definitely worth the buck or two worth of pesos I left as a tip left on the bed every day. 
I'm sure I am forgetting something but you get the idea. Such a truly wonderful experience that I have already made reservations for my next visit!

Wonderful Stay at Hotel Maela

The location is wonderful.  Within easy walking distance to many sites and markets.  the restaurant on-site is also good, though can be a bit slow at times. 

Unfortunately, the hotel lists Air Conditioning as a feature on multiple booking sites, however there is none.  The ceiling fans are not effective in cooling off the room when it is warm.  Had the hotel not listed AC as a feature, my rating would have been higher.  Note that the hotel only accepts cash as payment.

No AC

This is a small hotel in the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico.  Staff were very acommodating for a friend  with difficulty climbing stairs, who had booked a "first floor" room,  not realizing  that was one floor above ground level. Staff were able to give her a very nice room on the ground floor without extra charge. The hotel has a nice restaurant,  which she enjoyed ( and my wife and I have on previous occasions) and is in an area convenient  to arts, activities, other restaurants and taxis to everywhere. All of this and at a very reasonable price.

Nice, comfortable hotel in a great location in el centro de Oaxaca

If you're looking for bare-bones minimum and want to deprive yourself of any pleasure then Hotel Maela is for you.
Yes, the location is great, but that's where it ends. Even with the outside temperatures at 86 degrees, we could not manage to keep our room comfortable enough for sleeping. Some guests actually slept with their doors open. One of the rooms had two beds but not a single chair on which to sit. The worst part was the shower area which was loaded with mold and other nasty stuff (see my photos). There were tiny ants around the bathroom sink as well. As for a nice view - don't count on it. You'll need to sleep with your windows open so expect the nearby church bells to awaken you at 6:00 AM.
I frankly don't understand all of the high ratings.

Suitable for a Monk

This hotel is very quiet and very nice,  and very colorful, rooms are big and bathroom is small but ok and very clean, and balcony is beautiful. 5 mins from main street and 15 mins from main square. Oaxaca is beautiful city and street where is this hotel is full of colors. Great place to stay

Good

We live in the country-side and Hotel Maela is our "goto" hotel in Oaxaca City. It is simple, reasonably priced, clean, roomy and the location is great. It is cheaper to book directly with the property.

Location, location, location

I enjoyed my time here with the exception of a busload of children staying here who were very noisy late at night and car alarms going off. The hotel has a luxurious feel to it and is very comfortable. Good value for the money. Bed was nice and nicely decorated rooms. The restaurant has good food. No one here speaks English so be prepared to navigate as well as you can. Wifi was off and on. Great location as it's just across from the Ethnobotanical Garden and close to many restaurants. Great tapas restaurant directly across the street; El Olive.

Comfortable hotel.

After having my flight cancelled due to the horrible earthquake to strike Mexico City I had to find a last minute room for a night. The hotel I had just left was sold out so I had to find somewhere else. 

I saw Hotel Maela on trip advisor. It was in a great location with a great price. I was excited to stay near Santo Domingo at a hotel that had charming photos. The lobby looked welcoming and there were nice fountains on the property. 

The man at the desk greeted me by saying "Dimé". He let me know that they only take cash. Luckily I had enough to cover the cost of the room. When I told him it did not say that when I booked, he became visibly annoyed, hit his hand on the desk and basically said well that's the way it is. This was the only rude person I came across in Oaxaca during my 6 days there. 

The room was pretty small, had a small sign telling guests not to iron their clothes on the back of the toilet (???), and water from the shower flooded the floor of the bathroom even though I had the shower door closed. No bath mat or bath mat towel was provided. I could hear next room's tv and conversations clearly as well.  There was lots of noise from cars outside. The bed was very creaky but comfortable enough for a short stay.

It was a great price for a last minute hotel.
They were nice to call a taxi for me very early in the morning to go to the airport.
