Casa Alebrijes Hotel

It seemed that I had been everywhere in Mxico xcpe for the "second" city, capital of Jalisco.  A friend stayed at Alebrijes a few years ago--different owner, different ambiance. 
 My room faced to patio and the iconic fountain-- separated by a a wall of 30 studio glass.  Beautiful and very peaceful. 
César, Francisco, Israel,and  Claudia became my family--the made the visit wonderful.

To take the official taxi from the airport, you pay at the kiosk before leaving the baggage reclaim area; the cost was MXN 335 (c. £14) as at March 2019. The staff are friendly. Note that the rack rates for the rooms displayed at reception are substantially lower than at Hotels.com. Our spacious room was provided with a large safe & free secure wifi. A continental breakfast was included, served from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Our first visit to Guadalajara and we chose this hotel, actually more like a family style home, to stay at over the Easter weekend. It was very quiet as less than half occupied which made for some lovely alone time in our room after visits on foot to many of the sights. Regrettably it was a religious holiday and much was closed for the first 4 days we were there, another story for another time. The hotel staff were most helpful and if we ever return ti the city, this spot would certainly figure in our decision~

Friendly hotel in lively area

First visit ~

The hotel has new ownership since my last stay in November 2018.   Gave it 5 stars at the time.  The previous owner took an interest in guests, was helpful with nightlife and restaurant recommendations, served a limited breakfast in the morning, and presented you with a gift upon arrival.  All these extras are gone.  But the owner or manager had time to engage in heated discussions with his staff, as if they had no guests in the house.   The rooms are still excellent but you may not get your second towel, and the location is also still excellent, especially for those interested in the historic zone or gay nightlife - many bar options in the area, many things to see within walking distance in a relatively safe area of the city, day or night.  But the hotel ambiance and service has changed for the worse.   In fairness, what I experienced was during a transition period, and I certainly hope the new team manages to bring the hotel back up to prior standards.  For that reason, I would not rule out another stay; but not after I check out other options in the neighborhood.

Stayed here a year earlier, things have changed

The hotel website and amenities have changed since we booked - and since our first trip here; parking and breakfast are no longer included nor available, and these changes aren't yet reflected in the TripAdvisor description. What hasn't changed is the excellent location.

The hotel is a set of rooms opening onto a charming semi-enclosed courtyard. Well, it was charming on our last visit; during our most recent visit it seemed to be hosting a guest and employee smoking marathon that filled the guest rooms with a light fog of cigarette smoke, negating the promise of fresh air from open windows(there is no air conditioning) and one of the amenities is having non-smoking rooms.  Also, the staff seems to invite friends over at night for drinks/dinner/snacks and the noise carries into the rooms.  Other than this, we enjoyed our stay in Guadalajara and would recommend this neighborhood.

Great Location. New Management?

This attractive hotel is well kept and very clean. There was a continental breakfast included in the room rate which is served on the upper floor. There was a good comfortable bed and powerful shower with hot water! The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral and Governor’s Palace.

The surrounding neighbourhood is rather gritty with loads of graffiti, a mix of workshops and rundown residential properties which I found off putting. There has been some regeneration in the area. There was a square a block away with a couple of restaurants and bars but little else in the way of “cafe culture” close by. It was recommended to take an Uber if heading out after 10/11pm.

In summary: nice hotel but not so good neighbourhood.


Cute hotel 

This booking was a complete disaster. Immediately upon walking in to silent dark, dank, silent and completely uninhabited lobby, it conjured scenes from the classic horror film, The Shining.

Upon reaching my room, I was further shocked. It looked nothing like the photos advertised: Holes in the walls, no lamps, zero art on the walls, wires hanging out of the walls, everything askew, and just enough light to barely see. It further had a foul odor, a non-functioning safe, shaky wifi, and was warm enough to keep you up all night sweating (no A/C).

I immediately requested a refund through the booking site, and it almost immediately bounced back with a message from the hotel manager/owner: "sorry, our policy is non-refundable.”

The attendant then visited my room asking what was the meaning of my request. I explained the obvious (see above), and her response was along the lines of “Manager says no.” I said fine, I’ll be sure to leave an honest review of my stay here.

Five minutes later the attendant knocks on my door again. “My manager says you must leave the hotel in ten minutes.” I, while flabbergasted, replied that was fine, as long as I was getting a refund. After all, the place was awful and leaving sounded like a great idea.

Another five minutes, and now the MANAGER (name on file and filed in subsequent PROFECO claim) knocks on the door DEMANDING (screeching) that I depart. Again, I said that would be fine with a refund. “Absolutely not!!!” He shrilled. “Then I’m not leaving. You have my money.”

I told this man I would be filing a claim with PROFECO (the Mexican equivalent of the BBB but with a powerful bite) because of his behavior and the customer service of the hotel. Door shut in his face.

Another five minutes, and another knock on the door:  “You must leave now or we are calling the police to remove you!”

WHAT??

I informed him that I knew my rights, that I am a resident of Mexico, and he needed to leave me alone. A tantrum on his part ensued, and he brought along a friend to help intimidate me. Again, door closed.

I went online, found a REAL hotel to stay at, and left. I had had enough, and money was never the issue.

An hour later I received an email saying my card was “declined” and that I was receiving a refund. Interesting timing. While I appreciate the refund, I also know I deserved the refund. I DID NOT deserve to be harassed, harangued and left searching for somewhere to stay at 10PM on a Friday night. I also did not deserve to be false advertised too.

This hotel is obviously dying a slow death.

Avoid at all costs.

Dark, Dismal and False Advertising

This place is barely in business.  When I arrived they seemed to not even have internet and were unsure about my reservation through Expedia.  After I stayed Expedia notified me that they fraudulently misused my credit card information and suggested that I cancel my credit card.  The place is lovely but apparently it is run by crooks.
