Operated by a French couple, this fair establishment shows many signs of the heritage of its owners. Trendy without being posh, the interior has comfortable large chairs in the lobby. Throughout the hotel, colourful paintings brighten the rooms, and the marble stairs each have wrought-iron banisters (on one side) which are extremely beautiful. Most importantly, the staff are very friendly and easy to chat to, when they are not too busy working of course. In all honesty, this is a family hotel, with nothing too flash, but the price is therefore extremely reasonable. The rooms are not modern, but everything functions and is clean. Breakfast is continental with juicy cuts of meat, cheese and a selection of breads, all of a high standard, and of a vast quantity.  

At the heart of this operation lies its restaurant, and truly, Les Timandines is an experience. While our little heir was asleep safe and sound upstairs, we settled in the stylish restaurant. Extremely friendly staff made us feel welcome at every turn despite my husband stubbornly not wearing any shoes (which went politely ignored). We enjoyed a steak done to perfection with fries (husband) and a deer stew (chevreuil) so tender it nearly fell off the fork (me). Vegetables: delicious; spaetzle, a type of noodle, are probably more of an acquired taste. However, the icing on the cake here was, unsurprisingly, dessert. Our waiter recommended the chocolate soufflé, and I am grateful for the advice. The soufflé had a crust baked to perfection, and the filling was of a delicious almost creamy consistency. However, it was the side of a roasted pineapple ring, topped with true vanilla ice cream that gave me an endorphin rush. What a treat...

The restaurant is a small hidden gem. We had the 50€ Menu with two starters and weren't disappointed at all. The (high quality) food is traditionally prepared and very tasty. It is one of those restaurants where you get top quality for your money.

Small Gem

We arrived on a Sunday evening with a 7 pm deadline to ensure our booking. We arrived a little late but the proprietor or manager had waited for us. The room for the three of us (spouse and teenage daughter) was very comfortable and quite spacious albeit in an economical way (no wasted space). We liked the hard floor (given the state of some of the carpets you find in some US hotels they could take a leaf from the European book on that score). Bathroom/shower were fine. Beds were comfortable. Parking was free on the street (it's a cul-de-sac) and very close to the hotel. There are railway tracks and a station not too far away but we didn't find it particularly noisy nor did it disturb our sleep - and we had the windows wide open since it was quite warm. 
No air conditioning but the room stayed quite cool.

The town is fairly quiet but we walked to a bar where we had the local Diekirch beer which, by the way, is pretty good.

The hotel is off the main road through town, down a slight hill towards the railway tracks (there's a Chinese restaurant nearby) to the end of the cul-de-sac.

All in all a very good hotel and well situated for exploring the lovely Luxembourg countryside. We were touring some of the old Battle of the Bulge sites in Luxembourg and nearby Belgium the same day and the next.

A nice hotel in the pleasant Luxembourg countryside

We stayed at this hotel for one night, while passing through Luxemburg to France. We had a good night sleep, clean room. They had a very nice restaurant in the hotel. The interior  was well decorated. Good service and well cooked food.

This review is on the restaurant part of Les Timandines only.

After having read positive reviews, underlined by the fact that Les Timandines is a Michelin recommended restaurant (two forks), we were more than excited to have dinner at this place. The outcome, however, left us with somewhat bitter aftertaste in our mouths, and not only because of the rather disappointing dishes.

The starter, clear soup with vegetables was not bad, but nothing special either. The second course of marinated John Dory (Peter's Fish) was well-below expectations: Way too dry and way too leathery. Far from the refined taste of a good John Dory and a gross insult for such a tasty fish. The main dish of roasted duck fell even more short. It was tough, lacking flavour and tasting 'liver-ish', close to a dried-out third-rate duck in a cheap restaurant.

After complaining about the poor food in general and the duck in particular, we decided to ask for the bill. The chef and we had a clear difference of opinion on the quality of food as well as on the amount on the bill (99 Euro in total including two aperitifs and a bottle of mineral water). We didn't want to pay for the duck that we didn't eat, the chef insisted on charging it on the sole fact that he cooked the damn bird no matter if we liked it or not, period. He even suggested on calling the police and said he wanted the money as he will never see us again anyway. Well, talking about great customer service.

Anyway, we all agreed on having different opinions and we paid the 99 Euro. 

I don't believe the chef is a swindler, but he sure has very questionable business ethics and, based on the Michelin recommendation, a total day-off on his cooking skills.
