This cute big house turned into a homestay for guests and the house and room are really clean. The location is great with a sea view.
We had a King Room with a front view, The Room is spacious and very comfortable with a little kitchen and appliances. The room has a little space to do laundry as they have a washing machine.

They do have restaurant area with sea view however that day when we stayed in they didnt serve breakfast. Just know that this house is owned by a local, so there could be a challenge for language. However they were nice during our check in.

Otaru Canal from this house is only 15minutes.
Room view is really excellent.

Great King View Room with Great Sea view

This is a lovely house on a quiet beach. Not "luxurious" but clean and comfortable. Rooms are very large, unusually so for Japan. Ours had lofts, for a large group per person costs would be very low. 

Very relaxing, sunset from our rooms balcony was sensational. 

It is about a 15min cab ride from Otaru station. For the budget minded, there is a local train that gets to within walkable distance at Shioya station. (Included in Hokkaido pass). 
The owner arranged a cab back to the station for us, no problem. He has little English, but Google translate does the trick. 
Cash only, but prices are low. We used an ATM in Otaru, again no problem. 

No restaurant, as mentioned in other reviews. We brought a picnic dinner from the Otaru markets and station; a crab, assorted sushi rolls and onigiri, edamame, pastry, beer, etc. The rooms have fridges. And also tables and chairs! (Pro tip: always bring and oyster knife and crab/lobster scissors to seafood eating countries, you will be frequently glad you did). 

Altogether a really pleasant experience, and a nice break from the usual rush. Highly recommended. 

And now for something completely different. 

It's a beautiful small inn right on the water with gorgeous views. The cab fare was not terrible--$25 from Otaru main station. It's about 8 kilometers, in a tiny village outside Otaru. There are buses but only once per hour. We packed our dinner bento boxes and were perfectly happy eating to the peaceful sound of the surf.

A bit out of the way but worth the cab fare

This guesthouse is located off the city centre, about 20 mins drive away, but is right on the seafront - so you will either love or hate the location and it depends on your cup of tea. It is actually location in a residential area so there is no food in the area and you must drive out in either direction (either into the main Otaru town or the small town further north) to have a meal.

Also, note that this is a big 2-storey house converted into a guest house so there is no lift and you need to carry your luggages up the stairs to your room (though the host did offer to help with our luggages).

The host is extremely friendly - a Shanghai Chinese who is managing the guesthouse on behalf of his niece (if I didn't hear wrongly). If you have a request and ask nicely, I'm sure he will do his best to accomodate. However, note that the guest house does not operate during winter.

On a clear day, you will be able to catch a nice view of the sunset.

The room is extremely spacious, though the fittings can do with some refurbishment. However, it does evoke memories of staying over in a room from a friend's place. My room have a small balcony where we can step out into, which is not something all rooms have. The WiFi signal is strong all round the guesthouse.

There is also ample parking space - there are only 5 rooms but probably enough space for 10 cars to park!

Quiet seaside stay

We had a really nice stay at otaru geihinkan. The place/ room had a balcony which overlooked the sea and it was really beautiful to see the sunrise in the morning. The room was big and comfortable and the toilet was well stocked with basic amenities. However you will need a car to get to the accommodation as the area is rather secluded. The owner is very friendly and helpful in recommending places of attraction nearby. Overall, it was an excellent stay!! Thanks for having us :) 

Nice accoms just near the sea! 

From the previous reviews we were ready for this place. It is relatively isolated, has no food service, there are no shops or restaurants close by, it is a little tricky to find, and the owner doesn't have much English. But we loved it! We stocked up on food in a supermarket in Otaru and prepared dinner in our room, plus of course wine and sake. The next morning we had our own simple breakfast of fruit, yoghurt and pastries on the tables in front of the hotel, and the elderly man graciously appeared with some Japanese tea. Although he did not speak English, he was so friendly and offered us badminton equipment to play in the car park. What is special about this place is that there is virtually no other tourist infrastructure in this village, which seems to be based around fishing. We had a lovely walk along the seafront before breakfast and found it so peaceful. We hardly saw another soul. The hotel is small, set right on the seafront with no other hotels. The rooms are quite comfortable with good views. So different  from the busier hotels in the larger towns. Highly recommended
