we visit japan onsen resort for snow vacation many times per year. this is our 2nd time to visit nozawa onsen. Comparing with other Japanese hostel I have ever stayed in japan, this made me a little bit disappointment. I would not say it's bad but just not good. 

Good 
* price is reasonable 
* good location : walkable distance to lift , close to bus station and main street ( restaurant, onsen are nearby) 
* good onsen 
* good price for discount lift ticket 
staff can communicate by English

Not Good
* old room which is not maintained very well.  there some Holes on the door to balcony. we felt cold after the 1st night sleeping and had to fix it by ourself (refer to picture).
* heater is not very warm and noisy 
* breakfast - soso. not good as other Japanese hostel with similar price

All sort of equipments were decrepit in this accommodation but the dinner served here was very good.If you are able to eat raw fish,try it.The location was very convenient from bus stop.Don't be afraid of missing to get off the bus.This accommodation is near by the final bus stop.

Reasonable

I went ot Nozawa Onsen with my daughter for skiing in Japan (note that we are French and it was our first time skiing there). We exchanged trhough internet with the owner and could easily make the booking. The ownber was nice and indicated us how to come from osaka to Nozawa Onsen.
Rooms were pleasant. They are Japanese style with tatami and futon but quite big for Japan and very clean. Breakfast was delicious. There is wifi conenxion up top the room - however, I am not sure it reaches all the room. They have a Onsen that is nice and good for relaxing. last, it is not far from the ski slopes and at the same time loacted in the middle of the village, 1 minute from the bus station.
The owner was very kind and attentive to us.

Classified as budget accomodation but really good and worth it

A nice stay.  The hotel was full and we were lucky to have a great bunch of people staying there.  The common areas are quite small, but this encouraged conversation.  Just make sure you rug up as these areas are quite cool.  The hosts are very kind and will do a load of washing for you for $3. Brekky is an experience every morning with an eclectic range of Japanese delights ( there is always toast And cereal). A bit of a walk to the moving walkway to get to the slopes, but ask nicely at the rental shops and they may let you keep you gear up near he lifts. The rooms were quite large and comfortable but not serviced  (we stayed five days). The onsens were clean and welcome after a day on the slopes; however, there did appear to be a lack of toilets with us having to wait 30 minutes or so in peak period (after breakfast). Surprised with the amount of westerners at Nozawa.

Good for the price

This is a lovely little traditional ryokan which is very clean and has everything you need. The staff are exceptionally friendly. It is also well placed close to the Nozawa town centre near plenty of restaurants, public onsens and close to the escalator to the ski-field. Even in the depths of winter our room was very warm and comfortable.
