I had a very nice stay at Gasthof Ami. It's an older house that has been converted into guestrooms, with a common dining area, and both private and semi-public baths (one indoor, one outside). It is dated, but very clean/well maintained, and the service is great. It's a little beyond the center of town, so not so convenient to access without a car; however, there is a bus stop about 5 min. walk away, so that's how I got around while visiting Nikko. If I ever make it back that way I will definitely book again.

Fantastic stay!  Highly recommend.  This guesthouse is amazing value for what its offers.The building itself is a bit older, so the interior is dated and aged.  However, the rooms are very spacious, with multiple bathrooms and comfortable beds.There is both an indoor and outdoor bath area.  The outdoor bath house is intimate and private, perfect for couples looking to enjoy a soak together.The owner that runs the guesthouse is super accommodating and an overall fantastic host.  He speaks very limited English, but his hospitality transcends any language barrier.

If you know what you're in for it's great! Clean, basic, warm Andre he outdoor Onsen is a treat. Owners speak very little English but are kind and eager to help. It is a cottage- IE it feels like a getaway at grandmas, but with a sweet outdoor bathtub. It's away from town and not really walkable, so know your last bus options. There's also nothing around there at night food-wise so don't expect to be eating close to home. To find it from bus stop 14 (Arasawa), cross to the other side of the the road, walk back towards town a bit, follow the wooden sign for "ikoi" up a laneway then turn right. It's the one with no signage at the end of the gravel area.

Cute little hideaway

I chose this hotel for its low price.  I was pleasantly surprised.  It is strongly reminiscent of a British B and B even down to the decor.  The owner is polite and helpful although not very chatty (too busy?) My room was clean and comfortable.  Guests can use the downstairs bathroom which is first come, first served and all rooms have their own bath and shower. Breakfast was passable.  If like me you are not fond of pork and ham, ask in advance as the breakfast has plenty of both in it. I can't comment on the dinner since I didn't eat there.  It offers a choice of meat or fish. The only negative is that the area does not have any bars or restaurants within walking distance. I got some food and drink from the nearby supermarket for my evening meal.  The hotel is easy to find.  If coming by bus, get off at the 14th bus stop and walk back to where you see the sign (see my photos below) Turn left here, it is right after a hotel called Mori no Uta which is on the main road.  This hotel is mid-way between Toshogu shrine and Lake Chuzenji so it is idea for a weekend away in Nikko.

Good value for money

I chose Gasthof Ami for the reasonable price so had no real expectation s that it would be anything out of the ordinary.  It is very clean and quiet. the windows are double-glazed which also makes it warmer than a typical Japanese small hotel in winter! Inside and out, it is reminiscent of a British B & B.  The owner was polite and businesslike but not particularly chatty, I assume due to being very busy as much as anything else. The WiFi was a bit erratic but came back after a few minutes. There is an outside hot tub but in early March, I passed on that.  The small hot tub inside can be used by guests anytime. It is not a public bath, simply lock the door and soak for a while. The area is quiet and nice for a walk.  The only drawback is the lack of any bars or restaurants within walking distance.  You can get something at the nearby supermarket.  The breakfast is typical English style.  If like me, you don't like pork or ham then ask in advance since there is a lot of it in the breakfast. The coffee is good!  Getting there is not hard at all and you do not need a car contrary to what another reviewer said.  Get off at bus stop No. 14 - Arasawa, cross the street and walk back for a few minutes.  Pass a hotel called Mori no Uta (森のうた in Japanese) and turn left at the corner.  There are some signs there indicating several small hotels.  Walk down the road and Gasthof Ami is more or less in the middle. See my photos for an image of the hotel and the signs to look out for.  
This is the perfect location to spend the weekend in Nikko, See Toshogu on Saturday, stay the night at Gasthof Ami and then go on to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls on Sunday.

Reasonably Priced and High Quality Place to Stay

The owner was very helpful in all things.  Even washed our clothes for us !  Only complaint was we came in a little late and we needed to eat supper.  Unfortunately, there were no restaurants near by---only a supermarket, which we made do with.

No close restaurants

Nice rooms, ample room. Pleasant but hurried host. Problem is no system to schedule the private outside onsen. So if you come down from your room it is often in use and showing the close sign.Also there is no information on booking that you BETTER include breakfast because it's miles to any place that opens for and sells breakfast, if you can even figure out where it might be. Owners English is very limited.

noce.place to stay bit do your homework

Location:  about a 10-minute drive from the UNESCO sites in Nikko.  You will need a car to get there.  Google Map and GPS will both lead you to the wrong place.  It's actually located just off the main road on 120.  

Service:  The male owner knows simple English phases.  He was busy throughout but made sure we understood everything about the facilities and then the meals.  He just seemed too busy to be friendly but everything went well overall.

Room:  We had a room at the second floor of the main building.  It was a typical B&B style with a sitting area and a large, comfortable bed.  The room was originally two rooms combined into one so there were two bathrooms.  There were some nicks and scratches, and the carpeting was somewhat worn.  For a Japanese establishment, it's probably not 100% clean compared to some of the best hotels and ryokans, but it wasn't dirty by any means.  TV size was small, and it could not be seen from the bed.   Free WiFi in-room but somewhat spotty reception.

There is an artificial onsen in the building next door.  There wasn't much of a view though and it was quite small.  Combined with the rainy and misty weather, we did not try it.

Meals:  Many Japanese pensions serve Western food and this one is no exception.  Food quality was good overall.  The onion soup and the fish were the standouts for dinner, while the breakfast salad was good.  There are 1/2 bottle wines available for under 2,000 Yen.

Conclusion:  Two good meals, an overall decent quality room, all that for just 15,000 Yen for two people.  Good deal overall.  Recommended.

Quality pension overall at a great price

We were pleasantly surprised with the mixed Japanese/Western family room.  Room was large and included 1 queen, 1 single bed, tatami mat sleeping area 2 bathrooms and an attached sitting room.  The host speaks some English and was able to communicate everything without too much difficulty.  They have an indoor and outdoor onsen/tub for use.  When you go in to use the onsen you flip a card on the door and lock the door behind you.  Outdoor tub could fit 4 adults.  Robes and slippers are provided in the room.  Our kids liked sleeping on Tatami mats on the floor - bedding was easy to use.  Bed was comfortable.  Location and price were great!  We did not include breakfast or dinner.   The place is a bit hard to find - turn in to this drive way 36.750655, 139.580252 - house and parking are tucked away to the far right.
