This hostel is 5 minutes walk from Nagano train station. I stayed in private room in Japanese style which nice and comfortable but wifi signal in the room was so poor. However, you cannot stay in hostel during 10 am. to 4 pm. for the cleaning reason. 

I stayed here once on a stopover to the Alpine route 3 years ago, and this is my second stay. Nothing much had changed, staff is still friendly, rental bath towels still cost 100 yen, and i stayed in the same female dormitory which was the same room as where I stayed 3 years ago. Shower room is rather big for Japan standards. The only annoying point was the automatic sensor light in the toilet/sink area on level 2 which doesnt seem to work very well (yes, same as 3 years ago lol). You have to keep moving every few seconds in order to let the sensor know there is still someone alive in the area lol. I saw a few reviews that complained about how you are not allowed to stay in the rooms in the day, and yup that is true, but it is quite common for Japan hostels/guesthouses as they need to clean the place, and if you are on holiday, its not unusual to get out in the morning till night to enjoy! :) If you had wanted to relax you wouldnt be staying in a guesthouse :) so i believe its quite reasonable. will recommend all budget travellers to stay here!

Moritomizu Hostel is easily reachable from the Nagano Station, about a 2-3min walk. The common area has a traditional Japanese Tatami floor and you can enjoy free coffee and tea. There`s also a lot of folders with informations about Nagano itself, cities near Nagano like Matsumoto and other tourist informations. The staff uses the common area for eating, too. I think it`s a good sign if the staff spend even their free time in the hostel. All of the staff members I met were nice, talkative and helpful.
The rooms are clean and each bed has curtains, there nearly comes no light through them which is good. They offer enough showers with free body soap and shampoo.

Only negative thing were the hard beds. If you`re used to sleeping on the side, your hip will hurt after awhile. I guess it`s not that bad if you don`t stay too long though.

Nice Hostel with talkative staff near the station

There are very limited options for budget hostels in Nagano, and this one was in an excellent location. The staff were friendly but the amount of rules was excessive. Time restrictions on everything you do in the hostel could be quite frustrating. If they want to have this many rules, they should reduce the price as this was at the higher end of the price range for Japanese hostels. The beds were fine, but the pillows were terrible. Essentially a bean bag, not even a real pillow. I had serious neck pains from trying to sleep on this and ended up just sleeping on my sweater. Overall it is clean, and fine for a couple of nights if you are looking for somewhere to crash on a budget.

Place to stay

The hostel was nice and clean and the people their friendly. It is very close to the station - that is great!
Unfortunately it was not possible to stay in the common room over the day (10:30 to 16:00).

Perfect located hostel with strange regulations

Unfortunately I really cannot recommend this as a place to stay. The staff are very sweet and friendly, but this doesn't compensate the fact that guests aren't allowed to be in the hostel (from 1030am - 430pm)! You aren't allowed in your room or in the public space (kitchen/living room), or in the hostel, at all. I have never experienced anything like this, in Japan, or anywhere in the world, and I've stayed in many many hostels. We visited during a heat wave and would have liked to very much relax in our air conditioned room during the hottest time of the day. If you pay for a room, then you pay for a room, right? The hostel is also rather dated and definitely not up the same standards of any of the other hostels we have stayed in during our 4 weeks in Japan. It is, however, close to the train station.
