The stafs are very welcoming, making our stay very comfortable. Clean room, Nice onsen. The food is locally resource, chicken, fish and veggie.  Yes you come for the view, but the people are those who touch your heart.

Very pleasant stay!

Having stayed in several good hotels and a family homestay so far on our tour of Japan, my family and I did not have huge expectations for our stay at Kazuraya.  We knew it was a small, family run inn situated in a rural part of Japan's Iya Valley.  However, we were very pleasantly surprised by our experience.

Kazuraya is situated in a stunning spot in the Iya Valley with fantastic views of the mountains and a very short walk from some fabulous waterfalls and a vine bridge, not to mention a beautiful gorge with crystal clear water running through it.  The accommodation (we had two twin rooms) was spotlessly clean with a typical Japan style little table and chairs, kettle, etc. It was also en-suite which was a bonus for this style of accommodation, with what seemed like a very new shower/bath and toilet.  The air conditioning worked well.  We were warmly welcomed and given a choice of three times for our evening meal which was a set menu.  We were also given a choice of three breakfast times.  The evening meal was in a dining room with western style chairs and consisted of many different dishes - they just kept coming!!  We were certainly very full by the end of the meal and were served by very obliging staff.  You also had the choice of several alcoholic drinks you could purchase if required.  

We were told that due to the good weather conditions there was a high chance of the fireflies being around a pond that evening a short walk down the road - we went and were treated to a wonderful display of nature.  We then had a go on the free massage chairs in the hallway.  Not for the faint hearted!

Our mattresses were put out for us whilst we were at dinner and were perfectly adequate.  After a peaceful nights sleep we had breakfast, again consisting of many courses.  On our second night's stay we had a different set menu which was equally delicious.

We spent our morning white water rafting locally (half an hour drive away) before visiting a 'spooky' village full of scarecrows and some vine bridges.  

For a small Japanese inn, we found Kazuraya to be marvellous and whilst obviously not a luxury hotel, we would strongly recommend it.

A hidden gem - well worth a visit

I loved my stay at the Iyanoyado Kazuraya. The location was great, just a short walk to the main vine bridge in Iya Valley. But Kazuraya is also secluded enough to really feel the remoteness of Iya Valley.
My room was wonderful, very well appointed and clean, and I had a wonderful view of the mountains.
But the high point was the staff at Kazuraya. They were all wonderful and kind, and went above and beyond during my stay. They even drove me to the bus stop in the morning so that I wouldn't have to walk with my suitcase. I would absolutely stay here again.

Great stay, great location, and fantastic staff

We stayed at the Kazuraya inn and had a fabulous experience!  The food was excellent and unique. And even though we aren't real onsen people, we loved the onsen there. The family that runs Kazuraya is really kind and we look forward to our next visit!

Fabulous Ryokan!

We decided to stay here for one night to explore iya valley and booked with breakfast and dinner. 

The owners of the ryokan were super accommodating and helped us move our luggage from a different place so that we could do a little trek to see the surrounding sights. The ryokan is really close to kazurabashi which is one of the top sights here and is a quick 10 minute walk to the bus stop heading to oboke. They helped to find the bus times suited to us. 

The rooms are so comfortable and had good amenities like hot water and tea. The beds also extremely comfortable and temperature of the room just right. Lovely view of the mountains too. 

The spa was just amazing with the outdoor view. Soap available too and hairdryer and moisturiser etc. Came during cherry blossom season and the view was spectacular. 

The meal was excellent with just the right amount of food and a lot of variety including the local speciality fish and soba. Waiters good at explaining the dishes for us too. 

A really wonderful experience and would recommend. 

One of the best Ryokan we have stayed in 

Kazuraya is walking distance to the rope bridge over the gorge (Kazura-bashi). Indoor and outdoor onsen. The outdoor one made of rock looks out to the mountains. Separate baths for females and males. 
We were there for 2 nights. Traditional rooms with tatami and futon. Kaiseki dinner included local river fish, excellent cuisine. Staff were friendly. English speaking limited. 
Note that the sign for the hotel is in simple Japanese katakana letters. Drive past the bridge to the end of the narrow main road and the hotel is up on the right. 

Secluded setting in mountains and gorge near rope bridge

We came to this area by bus to see the rope bridge which is the main tourist attraction in the area. There used to be many such bridges made out of vines to connect the steep hills and avoid long circuitous routes. This is the last remaining rope bridge in the area, but it is now actually supported by steel beams. Its scary to cross on foot, but overall, the bridge alone isn’t worth the trip out there. What did make the stay memorable was the lovely Kazuraya Ryokan and the beautiful surrounding country side and river gorge that you can walk along. The ryokan is about a 10 minute walk from the bus stop/rope bridge, but you can call them to pick you and your luggage up. The ryokan run by a charming family and you can tell they put a lot of effort and love into the cooking and upkeep of the ryokan. They make delicious seasonal dishes that are typical of the region and we were impressed by their choice of ingredients. The owner keeps a fish farm nearby to supply the hotel with fresh local fish. This hotel and the surrounding area made the stay memorable. The price was very reasonable.

Kazuraya is a wonderful Japanese style hotel (ryokan) in the lower part of the renowned
Iya valley. Getting here is as enjoyable as the hotel itself. The easiest way to come is by car. If time is limited you will most likely take the highway from either Takamatsu in the North or Kochi in the South and take the signs towards Oboke. The drive is on a well built  road and has some beautiful views of the river and gorge besides which your drive. Once you get to Oboke, follow the signs to Kazurabashi which is about 30 minutes from Oboke. Kazuraya is about a 300m walk up a reasonably steep hill from the famous Kazura vine bridge. 

If you have more time and are still planning on self- driving and are coming from Takamatsu in the North or Naruto or Takashima in the East, route 438 from Tsurugi is recommended. It is a winding road climbing to 1400m to the now defunct Tsurugi ski slope and then plunging 1000m down towards Kazurabashi. The signs are clear so it's difficult to get lost. However, allow time. The roads wind and are commonly only suitable for one vehicle at a time. As you come down from Mt Tsurugi, you will pass through the 'scarecrow' town of Nagoro which is well worth a stop; search on your browser to find out more. A little further on you can take the return drive into Ochiai, a preservation area of old (and not so old) houses, which are built on the mountainside.The road is extremely narrow at points and a little hair raising, however, is worth the 45 minutes up and down trip.

Otherwise you are most likely a keen cyclist or will come to Kazuraya by public transport. Trains run to Oboke from where you will need to either take a taxi or local bus. If taking the bus check out the timetable first as they are infrequent. 

So back to Kazuraya. It has about 16 tatami rooms of about 16m2, including private toilet and bath. The rooms have pretty good views of the valley below, but if you want to get better views, take a bus/taxi or drive to the Iya onsen and 'peeing boy' to be awestruck. The hotel offers an intimate Japanese bath with an outdoor bathing area. The lamplit walk from the main hotel to the bath is quaint and quintessentially Japanese. Rooms are available with or without meals. We didn't opt in for breakfast, however, enjoyed a fantastic multi-course dinner which comprised of local produce, including, fish, beef, venison, vegetables and soup. The table service was prompt and the waitresses took every effort to explain the menu. They will also cater for vegetarians if you let the front desk know at the time of booking. 

All up, it's a relaxing place to chill out or locate yourself for side trips to the local viewing points of the Iya valley and its few adventure attractions. We would certainly come back again.
