Oyado Banri

Although the couple running it hardly speak any English the service is excellent. They are always willing to help or answer questions and they even brought us some fresh fruit to our room. The room is basic, what you expect from a ryokan but quite big and clean. It's about half an hour on foot from the station but taxi's are also cheap in this area.

traditional japanese, very friendly, good spacious rooms

I stayed here for a couple of nights during the spring festival. It wasn't our first choice but it was the last place available. I don't want to say this is a bad place, because it's not, it's a big spacious ryokan with comfortable futons. With clean shared toilet and onsen facilities. All of which were adequate. It's nothing special but nice for a couple of nights. Be warned that the location is a decent walk to the station, roughly 15minutes.

Festival escape 

We stayed one night at this ryokan. From the Takayama station, we walked for about 25 mins trying to locate the ryokan. Once you know the location, it would take about 17-20 mins to walk to the station. The ryokan is managed by an elderly couple who could not speak any English. We managed to get by with my very limited Japanese words. The owner was very kind to drive us to the station when we checked out the following day. Our room, on the 2nd floor, was clean and quite spacious before the futons were laid out. There are 2 common female toilets and I guess it's the same for the male toilet. But, there is only one common shower with an attached onsen. The water from the tap is potable. A big plus point is the free WIFI in our room and the delicious traditional Japanese breakfast prepared by the couple.

A little too far from Takayama station

When you arrive at the Oyado Banri you will feel like you are travel in time. Everything is old style. The old couple don't speak English at all but they are really friendly. We were there at the spring festival and the man took us to the city center. It's a bit far from the attractions and the train station but you can walk or take a taxi like us, the trip is around 1000 yens. 
It's a average place to stay, don't expect nothing fancy. 
We had fun at the end, everything it's so different.

Time travel

We stayed two nights here. Here are some of the lowlights:
- not near the Takayama train station. It costs about ¥1000 to get a taxi here, otherwise it is a 20 minute walk. It’s also located in a small side street. Not advisable if you are dragging large luggage from the station. 
- hosts don’t speak any English. We ended up using Google Translate on my phone to communicate 
- this place was misrepresented to us by the website where we reserved our accommodation. The website said we could arrange with the host to provide dinner and breakfast. When we arrived we found out that they don’t make such arrangements, so no meals were provided for us
- room was adequate but stuffy. There was a lingering smell of smoke in the air too
- only two showers and two toilets for the entire building. Would be really inconvenient if many  people were staying there at the same time

Overall, the hosts try to be helpful, and one of them fetched us to the station in his van on both mornings. 

My advice is to pay a little more for accommodation in a location closer to the train station and the shops
