We reserved the room with private outdoor bath and Mountain View based on review by other tripadvisors. It was the best decision ever. We were concerned that bathing outdoors would be a cold experience but it wasn’t due to the heat from the outdoor onsen.

There is a free car park within 3 mins walk from
the hotel. The hotel also provides karaoke rooms and table tennis for us to occupy ourselves. The buffet dinner spread is fantastic as it includes oysters, beef and alcohol.

Loved this ryokan stay

The staff were very helpful both in getting me to and from the Aso train station (although the bus is only 300 yen). The selection of sizes and styles of Yukata for the Onsen was fantastic. Just remember for us westerners that there’s a difference between the entryway and the actual room (pictured). I almost had a moment despairing my tiny hotel room😂

Great staff

We booked a room with an open air onsen. There are only 5 of such rooms in the hotel. It's just as spacious as shown in the website. I specially like its design that the washing basin, the dresser, the small-sized fridge (not a minibar) and the closet can be hidden behind Japanese paper doors. 

The onsen area is just as spacious. It's equipped with a rack to hang and dry the towels, and a table with 2 chairs to rest and have a cold drink amidst the bath. The onsen bath is specially designed with a slanting surface to hold the heads up while submerging in the hot water. We lay there to look at the stars while enjoying the onsen.

Both breakfast and dinner are served in a buffet style. The varieties for both drinks and foods are abundant. At dinner, the qualities of the raw meat, especially the beef, for self grill was so good that we gave up eating other things else, with free flow of 8-10 sakes, 5 fruit wines and beer with iced beer mugs. There were comparatively fewer choices at breakfast, but still nearly 6-8 different iced Japanese teas and 5 freshly squeezed yoghurt drinks were offered on top of the ordinary tea n coffee.

The bingo at 8 was fun as each for sure will get a prize, big or small. Each guest attending is given a token for a game at one of the two booths. Yes, nothing big but happy for all.

We also played the table tennis though missed the darts in the karaoke room. We also enjoyed a few ten minutes on one of the five massage chairs in the side lobby.

Will definitely go back when visiting Aso again.

Superb

I stayed one night at Yumeoi-so with my wife for her birthday. This place books up quickly, so we were lucky to get a reservation on a holiday 3-day weekend. 

I'll start by saying the staff was very friendly. We can speak Japanese enough that the staff didn't need to use English, but it was clear that some of the employees were prepared to use very basic English if we needed it.

We got our room key, picked out our complimentary yukata to wear, and went to our room. This onsen hotel is clearly a bit old, but well kept. The carpet was a bit shabby in the hallways, but that doesn't really ever bother us if everything is very clean, which it was.

The room was good. We had raised platform futons, a tatami room, and a half bath. I've read a lot of reviews about the lack of a shower in the room, but that's usual for most onsen in Japan, so it wasn't a problem for us. The room had a great view of Mt. Aso and it's smoking peaks.

The hotel has a public bath, plus several private/family baths that you can use on a first come first served basis. My wife and I used the private baths several times, and only once had to wait a few minutes for one to become available.  

The hotel offers an all you can eat/drink dinner buffet, but we read reviews that the buffet has a limited amount of many items. We didn't feel like being competitive, so we decided to try a local izakaya instead. We were glad we did, because when we walked past the dining area, it did look a bit chaotic.

After dinner, the hotel has lots of things to do. There are karaoke booths and table tennis you can reserve for free. There's also Japanese carnival games and a few small arcades that you can play. We used the karaoke room, and it was fun.

In the morning, we did decide to have the breakfast buffet. It was a little chaotic, but there was a huge selection and a lot of local items that were delicious.

Overall it was a great experience and it was fun to explore the town. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and it was a very relaxing day.

Very entertaining and relaxing stay

Stayed here unexpectedly for one night after our flights were cancelled due to very heavy snow. I picked this place based on #1 ranking for Aso in TripAdvisor. The drive there was a bit challenging because of the heavy snow on the road, although I understand this snow was very unusual!

Arrived about 1 pm and couldn't get access to the room until 3 pm, so went to a nearby buffet lunch place recommended by the hotel.

Room was quite nice, good size, Japanese-style tatami room. Fairly basic and a bit dated, but clean and functional.

Dinner was a bit chaotic, and our designated table ("Big 69") was really quite a long way from where the buffet food was laid out. This made it a bit hard going back and forth with kids to get food. As we were already all exhausted we ended up not eating much... But I think if you are hungry or thirsty the all-you-can-eat / all-you-can-drink here would be quite good value, just be prepared for a bit of chaos.

There were various fun activities on offer after dinner, but we were so tired we didn't join in. Looked like it would have been good though. These seemed to kick in from about 8 pm.

We used a family hot spring bath. There are about 12 private family baths available on request for now charge - this isn't really obvious in English, but if you just ask at the front desk they will let you know which room(s) are available. As others have noted, the onsens are a walk across the street, which is unusual but didn't matter too much except that it was a bit cold coming back afterwards.

Our rooms (I think C238 and C239) were located right next to a designated smoking area, which meant every time we went in/out of our rooms we got hit with smoke smells. This was particularly noticable as we had young kids with us, split between the rooms, so were doing a lot of coming and going between rooms.

Overall though, for a last minute stay I am happy enough how things worked out, and would stay here again on a more relaxed schedule if I get the chance to be in Aso or Kumamoto again.

Family-friendly Ryokan I would return to

We stayed here on a Friday night and there were lots of children, in fact the ryokan had to an extent geared itself to being child friendly - not quite what I was looking for however the rooms did offer DVD players and there was a selection of DVD's in the lobby which were relatively up to date. 
One of the best experiences was actually arriving at the train station which is in a relatively secluded part of the country. It was quiet and so unlike so many places in Japan. We were picked up by the hotel coach (returned by taxi the following day at the expense of the ryokan) and driven to the Ryokan. The Public baths are actually across the road although we had one of the superior rooms overlooking the 5 volcano's . The room also had a large outside bath attached so we did not actually use the public baths. 
Dinner is a Viking experience with your own little table separated by walls and curtains. The selection of food is extensive and drinks are also included. Breakfast was also served in the same location although sitting areas were not preset. 
Entertainment was provided in the evening (bingo, games and karaoke competition) - not too my taste and therefore gave it a miss.
Providing the weather is fine you get good views from this ryokan particularly the 5 volcano's.

Family oriented Ryokan

I stayed at this hotel with my husband and 5 year old son and although the room was large, we found it to be quite old, nothing like the photos on the website. We were mislead by the photos and even asked the reception,'did u give us the wrong room?' They responded by saying that photo was only for 'website' purpose!. In reality, there was like a 20 year difference in the rooms, although clean and tidy. The meals are buffet style with good variety but a bit noisy and crowded. This ryokan had many onsen baths to choose from- we particularly enjoyed blending in with the local Japanese by participating at the bingo and games booths after dinner. Overall, I recommend this ryokan for families, especially with young children. 

Great value and fun but misleading photos

Full facility and entertainment which are good for family and teenagers. Lots of games, such as Bingo and table tennis. We booked Japanese room from website, we have no idea that there is no bathroom in the room. There are only vanity and toilet. Public bathrooms are opposite guestroom building, which is inconvenient since need to walk pass reception and public hall. Also hot spring in the public bath is dirty. After check-in we found out that there are some ensuite guestroom type on upper level. 18 private bathrooms are provided, which indicated on website; however, some private bathroom need extra pay and allow only 2-3persons. The Japanese room and guestroom corridor are very old. Staff can communicate in English quite well and friendly.
