Whilst I've found the hotel to be really comfortable and clean, my local friends would always warn me not to walk around the area in the evening.  I have not had any issues there and the location of the hotel actually seemed rather close and walking distance to the old town and transport links.  Therein could lie the problem as middle class local generally have a set of impressions of "safe zones" and the particular "Colonia" this hotel falls into is not on the list.  I've not personally had issue with that and have found the stay comfortable and good value for money.  There isn't generally much to do around the area after dark though - but the staff are lovely in directing you on public transport or calling you a cab.  They also have strict rules against guests having visitors in the rooms.

V clean and basic hotel in a residential area

Very basic, very cheap and clean hotel (although room lights were a bit hospital waiting room) with nice staff (who didn't speak English but we got there in the end), above all though you can't beat the location. Sure, it's not in the swish, bland, Americanized part of town, but you're walking distance from the buzzing market, parks, cathedrals (the rainbow-coloured 70's marvel that is the Rosario is a must) and bars of the edgier downtown area. Sure, there's security guards with pump-action shot guns outside some of the bars and petrol stations (you see them in Paris nowadays anyway), and lockdown (closing bars, shops and streetlights being expunged) is at 7pm, but that's San Salvador for you. Great value and happy to help staff made this a welcome stay. I would give this hotel 3.5 if I could. We want to go back.

Lovely staff, cheap n' cheerful

Good location and safe.

Pretty much of a culture shock even for me. Quaint little town old, old, old customs. Friendly people for the most part. Good tipo comer. Going to the lake tomorrow and will followup! Many small tiendas to shop at.That is all!

Must Experience

I have to admit that I was kind of afraid to stay in a small hotel in El Salvador, but Hotel Villa Serena proved me I was wrong. This is a small hotel which provides guests a warm cozy ambience.
Cleanliness was another feature that I have to recognize. I felt welcome by all the people who work at the hotel.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for an inexpensive but yet good place, to stay here.

Enjoyable stay in San Salvador

I was on an unexpected business trip overnight to this town and ended up spending the night and was put up in this hotel by my customer.  The hotel was clean and the people are wonderful...but I prefer a higher level establishment and for my personal preference I would not stay here again.  The shower was and experience in that the hot & cold was one extreme or the other and was quite challenging but great if you are hard to wake up in the morning.

Inexpensive basic room with GREAT staff & GREAT breakfast!

I stayed at this hotel because there was a mix up at another hotel I usually stay I was so upset but upon arriving at the hotel the receptionist was very nice and the staff Salvadorans are very nice people generally and always make you feel at home. The room was very cheap I believe like 30-45 US a night with television,microwave and other amenities. So I would highly reccomend this hotel for visitors for a good night rest hospitable accomodation and affordable prices. The only fault I had with this hotel is some business person came in the hotel late making noise but the front desk apologized for the inconvenience this is just an isolated incident so I could ignore
