OK, first of all a disclaimer. This place is not for the faint-hearted. When we went, due to excessive rainfall, we had to climb the muddy hill in the pitch black, the room we stayed in had a lot of insects in it (though mosquito net kept them off us at night), there were any number of frogs and snails hopping and sliding around the grounds and inside and the compost toilets were an experience in and of themselves. You're not staying at the Ritz.

With all that said and done, this was our favourite place to stay during our two weeks in Ecuador, partly because of all the above. The owner Joos was really friendly and helpful, and has built the place apparently completely on her own, and deals with any repairs or fixes herself. It really felt like staying at her home for three nights, and she made us feel really welcome. There were all manner of cats in the building, and our room had a catflap so each morning we woke up there was at least one cat in the room to wake us. Unfortunately, we only had time for one meal while we were there, but it was absolutely beautiful. There were hammocks on the upper deck, which had access to wifi, and the view over the town was stunning. I don't know if I'd have wanted to stay in the heart of Montanita, as it's very much a big party town and that might have been a bit much, so it was so great to be able to tackle the adventure of the trek back up the hill after a night out, and be surrounded only by the sounds of nature when we got back.

If you've ever wanted your holiday to include the feeling of staying on a surreal kind of commune, with all that entails, this is 100% the place for you. We didn't even know that's what we wanted until we found it. Leave your reservations at the door and go whole-heartedly into the experience, and I guarantee you'll love it. Montanita is a truly beautiful town, and this place enhanced our stay there no end.

A unique experience

Joos is an excellent host, she runs the hostel, makes breakfast, builds, installs new lighting, gardens, cleans, does laundry, and heavens knows what else all while guests enjoy the beautiful views provided by her labor. Truly the best view in town, and easily the vest vegetarian breakfast (maybe best all around breakfast) in town.The facility is simple, and comfortable, and anyone familiar with composting toilets won't feel intimidated by them; for those new to composting toilets, they are easy to use and relatively smell free. I slept in the 10 person bunk room, which is at the very top and provides some of the very best views, and a wonderful breeze to sleep in. I also thought the mosquito netting felt exotic and fun while being very effective.One night I had a collection of fireflies crawling on the outside of my mosquito net blinking; very beautiful.Punto Verde is above, and just outside of the buisy downtown; the kind of place to retire to when you want a rest from the noise and bustle of the streets below.  
Blisters on my feet: the wonderful location requires some investment to get to. Closed toed athletic/hiking shoes would be best. I wore Chaco sandals which were great until they weren't; serious blisters allong the strap lines. 

Great value, great location.

This place is amazing! Joos and her staff were incredible. It is only a 10 minute walk from town, but far enough away to be a quiet oasis with spectacular ocean views. Fall asleep at night to the sounds of the waves, watch gorgeous sunsets over the ocean, spend the day at the beach. The wifi is dependable, showers are outdoor and great, bunk rooms are quiet. The breakfast is delicious, and make sure to have dinner with the staff, amazing food! Definitely one of the best hostels in Montanita!

Amazing Hostel in Montanita!

I stayed at this property for a couple of months while I looked for another apartment. While here, the owner freely let herself into the apartment whether I was home or not (my identity was stolen while living here), and the property reeked of cat urine from the owner's four cats that lived upstairs. The owner abused my little schnauzer. She picked him up by the neck and threw him on two occasions (that I saw). When it rains even a little (which is often), the road becomes a slippery muddy mess taxis will not even traverse. The owner, Joos Fleskens, is a lying thief. The apartment was appropriated with complete crap that I wouldn't even use, so I gave most of it back to her & she still lied and claimed damages to the same property that was returned unused. The owner is little more than a beggar that needs to go back to the Netherlands and seek the mental health that she desperately needs. People (often high or crazy) often wander into the property, on two occasions, I was photographed by a complete stranger while working at my desk. They just walked up (because the property has 0 security), came up to the cheaply made glass doors, and started photographing. There is no air conditioning, but you have to leave the doors closed to keep the owner and other unknown people from just walking in on you. I remember one time at 4 in the morning I caught her trying to get into my room. The owner of this property is completely insane.

A Stinky Muddy Mess Owned by an Abusive Thief

I found Punto Verde to not live up to what was advertised. 

The room itself had tons of flies and bugs around the room (luckily a moskito net was provided) I fault this to the fact that their was a compost toilet in our room. 

The bed was reasonably comfortable and I had a reasonably good sleep, the staff were also very friendly which made all the difference. 

However, we arrived to the hostel at 6am and stayed one night. We however, we're charged for two whole nights!! (we had originally said we would arrive the night before but couldn't due to the buses) this is pretty bad form for a host and this has never happened to us before. 

Tax was also added on top of the advertised price making it even more expensive. 

WiFi was also not working at all (which the host confirmed she was trying to fix for the last month. 

Overall, pretty disappointed in my very expensive stay here, if the price was as expected, I might not have been so upset.

Not worth what I personally paid for it

This hostel literally surmounts every other place in montañita..in its components but also the concept as a whole. If you want to recharge your batteries, this is the place to stay! Joos and the boys are amazing cooks and serve you a delicious breakfast every morning (included and they even came up with a tasty alternative for me not eating eggs!). I highly recommend their dinners: the good company, fire in the lounge-chimmney and the great variety and taste contribute to a delightful happening. The construction, artwork and colors are well-chosen, functional and have a beautifully natural touch. The view is simply stunning and the distance to the beach(5min) and town(10min) is totally walkable. A wonderful experience, thank you for your great work guys!!
