We stayed here last year and enjoyed it, so it was a no-brainer to book here again.Unfortunately, we were its last guests. Employees informed us that the owner decided to open the hotel only to long-term vacationers, such as a month or longer, and the hotel was effectively closed when we arrived. We were grateful that the owner honored our reservation, which had been made months in advance and pre-paid. If you are looking for a place to stay long-term, the mansion offers a good location that is a short walk to all the hot spots in Willemstad. If they go back to booking for short term vacationers, don't hesitate to book here. Nelson, the night watchman, waited up for us to arrive at 1 a.m. after our flight was delayed four hours. We learned the breakfasts were no longer offered, and housekeeping wouldn't come on certain days. We were disappointed about the breakfasts especially since they were so good, but we had an enormous room in the mansion with a kitchenette so we could store groceries. We also had a private balcony that was large with room for a table and chairs and two chaise longues. The bed was comfortable, and the air conditioner was extremely quiet. The only downside: a club of sorts nearby that blasted music on a Sunday night (it was Easter night), and again later in the week. So, if Hotel Scharloo opens again for short terms vacationers, we will be there without a doubt. It is unfortunate what has happened. The staff is fantastic and the location can't be beat.

Closing for short-term travelers

We prearranged a late arrival and were met by the night watchman who escorted us to our apartment. Finding the hotel was a challenge as there are so few road signs in all of Curacao and we got lost twice before we found the hotel. There is very little parking but we were assured that it was safe to leave our rental on the street (with two wheels on the sidewalk to let other cars pass).
Our room was on two levels and the lower/main level was the bedroom and bathroom and the sitting area and kitchen was up some very steep stairs.
The upstairs also opened onto the balcony which overlooked the inner courtyard and small pool (too small for swimming).  The upstairs was also very hot as the AC was on the lower level as was the wall mounted flat screen TV that you could only watch from the bed.
As I guess is typical the rooms were dark to keep the heat down but in the evening the room lamps were not too strong and made reading for some of us old folks a little difficult.
Staff were friendly and helpful, and the space was adequate.  The kitchen consisted of a small bar sink, a two burner hot plate and plug in kettle and best of all a good sized fridge.  There were no screens or glass in the windows , only shutters and we kept them closed a lot as there were lots of birds around and some pretty big bugs of which one found itself on our wall and freaked out my wife.
Sitting at the table on the balcony we were able to watch iguanas on the roof of an adjacent building, basking in the sun while waiting for passing butterflies to eat.
There was no phone in the room but Wifi was excellent.
This is fairly basic accommodation within easy access of the floating market and other prime sites to visit in Willemstad.  We only used our rental car to get to and from the airport and to see the beaches in the west end of the island..

Great Location

We (DH and I) spent 4 nights at this charming B&B over New Year's. I echo other reviewers as to the charm, the convenient location and the super helpful staff - Mgr Ine rocks! 

Since I booked a little late for what is apparently the busiest week of the year, we wound up with just a standard room, which was perfect for us. The room (#5) was clean and very large, with a walk-in closet, and a huge modern bathroom. The a/c worked well, tho we didn't need it much with the fans and cross ventilation. It was handy having a little fridge, and there was a TV -  tho we never turned it on. The only reason I'm taking off a star is the bed was uncomfortably hard. 

New Year's Eve in Curacao is a blast! The Pagara parties are especially unique, and Hotel Scharloo makes a great home base for the festivities. Since these erupt in the streets of down town Willemstad and make it look (and sound) like a "war-zone", it was nice to have a retreat that was only a few minutes away from all the action :-)  We took a nice long break "back at the ranch" before it was time to head over to the floating bridge for fireworks and parties with the friendly locals. 

I'd like to address a couple of the negative comments I've read. First off about the parking. It's true that the gated driveway held only four cars. However, there was PLENTY of street parking just outside the gate. Remember we were there during the busiest time, very close to downtown - and street parking was never an issue. The worst thing that happened was we parked under a tree and the car was "christened" with a lot of bird droppings. 

Regarding the neighborhood - Scharloo is a historic neighborhood that is rebounding from some tough times. This does not mean it is "sketchy" or unsafe. Sure there are some nearby buildings that look like they could use a little TLC, but we never saw anything going down or had a bad feeling.  A woman traveling alone should be perfectly fine. 

Having said that, be aware there is an area you shouldn't walk around after dark. Behind Hotel Scharloo is a long road lined with colorful historic mansions. Great for daytime sightseeing. Ine (the Mgr) advised us not to walk around there at night, but since it didn't look scary and it was our last night we took a walk on the wild side. Towards the end of this uneventful stroll a nice Papiamento policeman (who spoke four languages) pulled up and advised us to leave the area. So listen to Ina. 

 Overall everything was DUSHI. There wasn't anything we couldn't get to very easily, and we were especially blown away by the Kura Hulanda slavery museum in Otrabanda. Don't walk on the floating bridge if you've got a plane to catch. It doesn't always close right away and you may get stuck on it for awhile (we had a close call...)

Fantastic place to spend New Years Eve!

Hotel Scharloo (pronounced scar-low) - I booked this hotel with Expedia before we left Australia. Silly me accidentally booked for 2 nights in October when it was meant to be November. It was also prepaid. It was only after I received emails from Expedia asking how my experience at the hotel was (in October) that it clicked!!
We were in Mexico at the time, calling from a public phone box, and managed to speak with Ine. A very helpful friendly accommodating manager. She assured us that she would honour the room when we arrived in November. I was so relieved.
We ended up with an upgrade and we stayed another 2 nights AND also allowed a late check-out for free. Ine and her student in hospitality Dan were both great. They helped us track down a friend on Curacao with multiple phone calls (we did not have access to a cell phone). The room itself (#15) was enormous. 2 levels - lower level bedroom tv and bathroom with aircon and fan. Upper level was a kitchenette, fridge, balcony, sitting area with fan. The balcony was opposite a wall, but still had a view of the garden, plunge pool and a glimpse of the city. The location is excellent, easy walking distance to all the best spots for museums, eateries, markets and the harbour. The maritime museum a couple of doors down is worth a look and the slavery museum Kura Hulanda in Otrobanda across the Pontoon bridge is also a great way to spend your time. If you want to eat like the locals at lunchtime, head to Plaza Bieu in the Punda area near the round market. Many of the locals are multilingual - English, Spanish, Dutch and Papamientu. We thoroughly enjoyed our  short stay on Curacao and highly recommend staying at Hotel Scharloo.

Awesome Ine!

Beautiful Boutique Hotel, very well located in Punda, Willemstad ... Staff-Owners really nice, very welcoming ... Only one issue: the taxi transfer I asked for, failed, and I almost lost my flight. Please pay attention to these issues. Other than that, I truly recommend this hotel
