Cheap, and in the centre of the city. Imagine you are about to arrive in Ibarra and you haven't booked anything yet, well . . . do not look furthermore, this hostal is your best choice. It is cheap, and you may enjoy the proximity of restaurants, bars or cafés and cathedrals among other sights. . . So. . . it is cheap. . . .yes. . . it may be not what you expect in the rooms and perhaps they may need a hand of paint and some other things. . . . . But it is safe, the service is good (María the head of staff is very helpful), showers do their thing (hot 24/7), surprisingly WiFi is tip top (I held a videoconference for 2 hours with 40 participants without any issues), they have an arrangement with a carpark in the vicinity (2 minutes walking). . . . It is what it is. . . . cheap and the best option among this range of prices. Their garden and the birds which live there are lovely, nature in the middle of the city. Highly recommended.

It is what it is

I volunteered in Ibarra for two months. I was travelling with my partner and we were looking for private accommodation for a great price. This was perfect. 

We were given a private room with private bathroom and were comfortable. The staff made us feel at home the entire time. 

The owners are excellent and will accomodate your every need. Further I just want to point out, based on previous reviews that they “do not lock the doors at night.” They most definitely do lock the doors at night time. It is bolt locked, two doors. You have to ring the door bell in which they confirm your identity before letting you back in.

Thanks for a great visit! You won’t find a better hostel in Ibarra.

The best place I love it'' this place is close to the centrum bank supermarket church and very clean., friendly people and the most important big and comfortable bed's. .. just for 12$fantastic. They have map's and also information about different place and activities in ibarra this hostal have hamaca and diferentes rooms with fantastic decoration every rooms is different I so happy to stay here

Backpacker is one of the most accessible hostels in Ibarra, as its price is not high since it includes services like free wi-fi, laundry service, and shuttle service. So it's a great offer and option. It has a courtyard area making it a really nice place, also the hammocks that hang between the courtyard columns give the place a relaxing touch, that is always appreciated. The people that work there are likable and always helpful when someone needs something.
The location is just wonderful, being in the city center just opens a lot of new experiences, making it the perfect place to stay when you want to have a little getaway from home and routine. 
Both times I was there, everything went perfect, the accommodation was pleasant, everything was clean and it gave a sensation of being in a safe place because the receptionist does not allow anyone who is not registered at the hostel to enter.

A place of friends

Very good hostal location.  Workers are very kind and helpful.  Nice kitchen area in back with fridge and small stove. Cute courtyard area.  Could use a coat of paint in rooms, but overall comfortable.   Wifi good. 

Good location

I stayed here for 8 nights. Liked the location that was a few blocks away from the busy retail areas and Parque Pedro Moncayo in Ibarra. I would definitely stay at this hostal again in the future. Ibarra is a nicely located city away from the tourist crowds

Nice staff... great value rooms

We were a group of five American international students staying in Ibarra for a weekend. For four of us, it was a return trip to take the Tren de la Libertad, which had been very highly recommended to us by many of our friends. We stayed at a different hostel the first time we traveled. Pros of the Backpacker are that the rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable, and overall, the rooms are very clean. Also, they have free WiFi. 

However, within the two rooms we stayed in, both of the bathrooms flooded extremely easily after showering, and the floors were soaked for the entire weekend even after we tried to clean them up. Also, the lock on one of our doors was completely broken, and although we were offered a different room for the three of us staying in that particular room to switch into, the desk gave the new room away later that day, so we slept for two nights in a room with a door that didn't lock. Because the Backpacker is completely open to the street with only the desk for security (they don't lock the front door at night, instead leaving it open), we felt quite insecure in this room. Finally, there is a karaoke bar called Zoom right next door to the hostal, and the noise produced was so loud and ran so late that we could barely sleep. Additionally, many of the other guests in the hotel were very loud in general, talking loudly, playing music, etc., past midnight. We waited for the staff to shut down their noise, but we were the ones who ultimately had to step outside and say something. 

Overall, if you don't plan on showering, and noise late into the night doesn't bother you, this place is fine and the prices are fair. It's very centrally located as well, and taxis come by often if you don't feel like walking. But I would suggest that for more than a one night stay, look elsewhere, because we didn't have the most amazing experience staying here.

Two nights to take the Tren de la Libertad and paraglide

My first negative review - the electric shower was faulty to the point where the wires were burning. When I brought this up with the staff they stated they were aware of this. What was frustrating was their decision not to warn me about the shower, and the fact they had tried to "bodge" it with some tape - how dangerous. When I asked for a refund, they declined.

Let down by dangerous electric shower and staff's poor response to solve the issue
