We only stayed here for one night but our experience was good. The hotel is quirky and we liked the decor. The room and bathroom were nice and spacious and quiet. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and it was one of the best meals we had for our whole 2 weeks trip. The food was great! We didn't have breakfast as we had an early pickup in the morning but we did see it and it looked fine.
Overall we were pleased and would recommend this hotel.

Good experience

The hotel is fantastic. From the outside it seems almost invisible, but inside you can find a historic and wonderfully designed building. There are paintings and sculptures everywhere, a magnificent courtyard invites you to stay. The rooms are a little old-fashioned but charming. Now the sad news: after the information of the employees, the hotel will close. We were probably the last guests in the Corona crisis. It is only to hope that this little lodge will open again at some point.

A dream hotel, but soon closed

Our stay was okay, however three things I hope the hotel will address very soon, as these are simple fixes 1) mattresses, pillows, sheets and linens are very old.  I think it's time to replace. 
2) all the lightbulbs are CFL and should be a bit warmer to not feel so creepy.  3) Breakfast selection and quality was pretty low -- even the coffee was disappointing.

Our group of ten people stayed there

First hotel after a long flight, we are very welcome. The hotel is certainly a little old (like those seen in movies in Latin America or Cuba) but the rooms are comfortable. First Costa Rican breakfast very good! It is well located in San José to take a first walk in the country and all services are available nearby

Nice and well placed.

We spent Xmas there. Our room was really nice along with a great breakfast. The decor thru out has so many stories from the past and you have a real nice gentleman there which will spend time to tell you all about it. It's really beautiful and comfortable. It's worth checking it out for you won't be disappointed.

Decor is amazing

As everyone seems to say, a very nice hotel close to the central market, banks and busy streets while still being quiet, a hotel that smells like the old hotel with a soul and a past, nice lunch, private parking.

Hotel of character

It was a quiet hotel, not far from the centre on foot. My shuttle bus didn't pick me up until 7 a.m. and didn't pick me up until 2 p.m., as I learned until after checkout - but the staff were extremely friendly, so I was able to return to my room until 11 a.m., had an excellent breakfast, and my luggage was taken care of afterwards, as I was on my way to pick up the shuttle.

Central, quiet, friendly

We chose the hotel because of the quiet neighborhood and the proximity to downtown. 
The many common areas of the hotel are very lovely and colorful. Rooms are spacious and clean. The hotel offers a free secure covered parking in case you come with a car. The staff is helpful and friendly and bilingual. We will definitely stay there again on our next trip to Costa Rica.

Historic Hotel in a good neighborhood

Very well located in the north of the city but very close to the centre, the Don Carlos also has other advantages: a very nice and useful reception, comfortable rooms, free parking (and that's a luxury here!),... not to mention the painting gallery that adorn all the walls and mosaics outside.

Very good establishment

The hotel is as authentic as one can find in Costa Rica.  The staff was attentive, helpful, and friendly.  The common areas (and there are many little alcoves and courtyards) are very lovely and colorful.  It is conveniently located not far from the Jade Museum, Barrio Amon restaurants, and other sites of San Jose.  Secure, free parking is a plus.
