There are 3 rooms in this family run building, and the one I have is huge for $15, including a private bathroom, air conditioning, and wifi. There’s a shared kitchen you can use too.

The building is on a dirt road with no real views and so don’t expect luxury digs like other places in Drake Bay.

Cabins are a good word for this place as it’s rough around the edges, but it functions quite well, and the value is astounding for $15.

If you write in advance, they will pick up at the dock if coming by boat, which is a plus given that it’s a decent hike up a long dirt road.

A bargain for open-minded types

We arrived at the hotel after three days trekking the Corcovado, looking forward to a minimum of basic comforts. On arrival at the hotel, the guy took us to what is essentially a basement extension to give my father his room, it was just about alright for the price but I feel "basic" is not really the right word. As mentioned by others the terrace is quaint but it's also the clothes washing area for everyone so the view is kind of hidden by soggy pants. We then went to find my room, upstairs - the bathroom had no window and led straight into the rain forest, the toilet was literally in the middle of this corridor room blocking you from the shower, the bedroom was huge but again more than just basic - there were more open cavities leading into the jungle, what I can only assume was some kind of huge man hole to enter into some kind of tank in one corner and a bust up old fan. I have travelled a huge amount on a small budget but thought i could still survive here... then once I left the room the key wouldn't open the door anymore, when trying to manipulate it, I realized the whole wall was a false wall that moved when applying the smallest amount of pressure - it had of course never happened to them before and was my fault as I was manipulating it wrong (?!). They have a horse over the road held on a rope of less than a meter and in a terrible state with no access to food or water. And it is probably worth mentioning that the hotel is most definately not central - drake is on a steep hill, most things going on around 100m up, this place is about 500m further up than that, past a building site and a few family homes out on its own. I did not feel safe here, and therefore left and found another hotel. At the local hostal, we were told that they often had people leaving cabinas el colibri due to cockroaches and similar reasons to us. Our booking on booking.com was cancelled by them after our departure which meant that I can't leave a review on there. I wonder how many other people have tried and failed because I can't believe it has a 5* review here. By all means stay here if you like an adventure and feeling safe isn't your top priority, but just know that the photos online do not at all resemble the real thing and that it is as basic as basic gets. 

More than basic

We stayed 4 nights at Cabinas el Colibri during our recent visit to Drake Bay. 

The accommodation is only a few minutes walk into the centre of the town and down to the beach. The room and the common area have a lovely view of the lush greenery and we could see iguanas and birds (including the odd hummingbird and lots of scarlett macaws) from our window. 

Andre, the owner, is very kind and always seemed to be around to answer any questions. He organised transport to and from the airport (10 dollars pp each way). He also arranged a night tour for us and recommended where we should get breakfast. 

The room itself is basic, but it's clean and affordable. The big selling point for us was the aircon- and when it's 35 degrees outside and really humid, this was a lifesaver! It's a little noisy when you're trying to sleep, but well worth it. 

The wifi was very slow, but adequate for quickly updating friends/family on your trip! We don't recommend you drink the water, but the local supermarket which sells bottled water is only a couple of minutes walk away. 

If you want somewhere with no frills where you can keep cool, which is close to the centre of Drake Bay with a friendly owner, we would highly recommend staying here! 

Affordable with aircon, close to the action and friendly host! 

Andre was sincerely kind, helpful, answered all my questions. He went out of his way to carry my luggage up the hill, and to the beach when I was departing by boat.
The room was clean, comfortable, air conditioned & fan! good water, wi-fi, and affordable! Nice central deck looking over the lush valley.

We slept three nights in el colibri. It was a great stay. Andre, the owner was very helpful and sweet. 
The view on the garden is great. The rooms itself are basic, but with all the things you need. 
Andre helped with our tours and arranged that we could have breakfast at a restaurant. He even walked with us to the restaurant, so that we had the right one. When we left he brought our bags to the beach on his motorcycle.
