Chose this B&B as a convenient stopping off point after crossing Arthur's Pass on our way to Christchurch. The room was comfortable and clean but the breakfast arrangements were not as we would have expected for a B&B (fairly limited choice and continental only). The host was not as friendly as we had met elsewhere in NZ but we could tell he was busy during our stay so this was understandable and he was helpful in suggesting somewhere for us to eat in the evening as his restaurant was full.

Comfortable but not up to our expectations

This quaint old house is the perfect place to stay on the way to Mt Cooke or Arnold’s Pass. 
Hamash was the perfect host, greeting us upon checkin and showing us to our room. 
The bathroom was across the hall, although ours exclusively. Plush bathrobes are provided, which let you go to and from the shower without worrying about clothing. 
The breakfast was continental, consisting of croissants, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, milk, instant coffee, teas, hot chocolate, several juices, breads for toasting, and butter/jams.  It was all served in a little room in the upstairs hallway. 
There is a restaurant on the first floor, which we didn’t try. 
The bathroom has large pump bottles of liquid hand soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. They smelled wonderful. 
There is a heating towel rack, which was a nice touch, an electric heater, and a magnified mirror, which is a plus for putting on makeup.  
There are stairs to the rooms, and no lift that I was aware of. This might be difficult for some people who have a hard time going up and down stairs. 
The only downside we experienced was the train tracks across the road. There were trains running all evening and night. Also, this road is a main thoroughfare for big trucks, which made it difficult to keep the windows open due to the noise. 
We did enjoy our stay at the Oaks of Darfield Inn. 

Loved our stay

It was our  51st. Wedding Anniversary and so off we travel  out to The oaks of Darfield and the treasured experiences of their lovely restaurant.
Any time we have a reason to celebrate, we often get in the car, enjoy the drive and sit back and enjoy the elegant old school service but without the fuss of over the top silver service of the past. 
Instead, you have Hamish, ever the quiet, efficient and professional Manager who makes each visit an occasion and celebration.
We both ordered the Fillet with mushrooms, potato cooked in duck fat, peas with Garlic and a small greens. Just Delicious.
Then for deserts we ordered the orange sticky date pudding and a different version of Tiramisu. The Orange sticky date was divine and the Deconstructed Tiramisu was very good without being exceptional.
Each time we visit , the food is always a real  treat to savour and enjoy.
B.Y.O. may be allowed but would need to be arranged with Hamish prior to coming.
Bed and B Breakfast is part of the Oaks of Darfield offer and parking is plentiful out the back.
The whole building and setting is so lovely with this old villa so beautifully set amongst the old trees and grounds.
Footnote - if you feel like getting out of town and out in to the Country, the Oaks is perfect for a nice leisurely day out or even just for a coffee and desert perhaps. 
Best to book - do note -  Theyopen I think from Thursday to Sunday only so do  check before hand.
Some days such as Mothers Day, there is  a special high tea for Mothers day offer from12 p.m. to 5 p.m. with no other menue available on that day.
For us, We will be back again as soon as we have a reason to celebrate or to just get away out of the city and enjoy a nice relaxed day out and would suggest that you too to go out and enjoy The oaks of Darfield experience.

WE RETURN TO THE OAKS OF DARFIELD OUR LONG TERM FAVOURITE RESTAURANT

We (a group of three friends) only spent one night here on the way from the big lakes in the South before crossing the Alps over to the West Coast - for which The Oaks was ideally located - but it was one of the true highlights of our first NZ vacation. We arrived on a sunny summer evening, and the house looked like straight out of a film set. While it's close to the main road (so there can be some traffic noise during the day, while it's quiet at night), it felt very cosy and secluded, surrounded by trees and green lawns. We were the only guests that night, and Hamish welcomed us and showed us the magnificent rooms, furnished and decorated with great attention to detail, with beautiful views across the fields, large comfy beds and spacious bathrooms with power showers - just what we needed after a long day of driving and hiking. We then headed down for dinner at the restaurant, and enjoyed every last bit(e) of our three-course meal - from the delicious, well presented food to Hamish's excellent service - while watching the sun set through the trees in the garden, and a little rabbit hopping over the lawn. We slept extremely well and rose to another sunny morning, which was even more delightful thanks to the fantastic breakfast offered. We felt very spoilt being able to choose from 4 types of muesli/cereals, 4 types of bread and warm croissants, a large selection of tea and coffee, different types of milk, freshly made fruit salad, juices, jams and marmelade, biscuits and mince pies... What a great way to start into the day!
We very much enjoyed our stay and our host's hospitality! Thanks to Hamish's training and experience as a butler, you truly feel like a guest in a luxurious English country house.

An absolute gem offering extraordinary hospitality and excellent food in a beautiful setting

Our family booked out the 3 double rooms for one night. The beds were very comfortable, the bathrooms clean and showers hot! Hamish is a most likeable and attentive host and made us feel very welcome. 
We also ate at the restaurant where they kindly accommodated dietary requirements. A very enjoyable start to our NZ holiday! Thanks Hamish!

Beautifully appointed rooms in heritage house, excellent service and care.

Hamish made us welcome in a lovely old heritage home.  The room was well appointed and comfortable and the en suite bathroom was just fine.  The only negative was the proximity to the main road, but fortunately traffic drops off late at night.  Besides, if you have a wonderful meal and sufficient wine in his dining room, you won't hear it at all!  Breakfast was a DIY job in the kitchenette, but more than enough after the previous night's big meal.  The superb croissants Hamish made tempted us right off the 'no breakfast' wagon!

Nice B&B in a heritage home

Great evenings dining with friends. Hamish is an amazing host whose service and cooking was outstanding. The Central Otago pinot was a fantastic combination with the rack of lamb entree and the the perfectly cooked beef main.

Right on the highway (however, if you're broken by the long trip that doesn't bother you anymore) Nice room and nice bathroom (we had the room with our own bathroom, the other two rooms have their bathroom directly across the hallway) Very clean water and chocolate on arrival Nice care products (very good body lotion) Nice owner delicious continental breakfast, fresh fruit, yogurt, croissants, various toasts, marmalade, honey and breadcrumbs coffee and tea so often and you want a lot

Good for one night after the long journey

The oaks of Darfield is a pretty old house (by local standards). My room was small, but very clean, and with an excellent bed. The bedroom window doesn't close well, and you hear the noise of cars and trucks passing on the road to Christchurch. Despite all this, I slept very well. The non-adhesive bathroom was perfect (clean, light). The atmosphere in this beautiful house was feisty, sleepy or almost dull. But it was a Sunday evening, and maybe Sunday is very quiet. During my stay I only noticed one person, the friendly and very shy hotel owner. The breakfast was good, with fresh fruits among others.
